Now how valuable can a FOURTEENTH post be?

Sorry, as long as it is made before October 15th, it's a First Post™ issue.

It's a good thing I wasn't drinking when I read that or I'd have coffee shooting out of my nose. ::nono::

I was turned off by that whole First Strike deal by them

Yes, this raised an eyebrow or two of mine.

It raised at least two of my eyebrows.

I'd pay a premium for one of the first coins struck from a new set of dies (especially ones that had been well polished), but the abuse of the "First Strike" term turned me off.

I notice I never replied to Aethel's request for a link. The issue is kind of moot because the threads in question were all deleted (first thing Monday morning, if memory serves) along with Laura's (Legend's) account.

So now Laura and TradeDollarNut are financing a consortium of experts (including John Albanese, Mark Feld, and Doug Winter) who plan to sticker TPG-graded coins that they believe to have original surfaces. They are concerned about the "dip and strip" mentality that turns old crusty coins into characterless monstrosities encased in holders with higher grades. David Hall has given his provisional approval to the plan (provided that it improves the hobby and keeps "original" coins from being ruined by their "conservators").

I don't know what to think about all that. Most of the coins I collect are probably not likely candidates for the added expense of the sticker.

Well THAT should be interesting to watch! I read some stuff on that consortium and I have mixed feeling as well ... but let's see.

If PCGS does not slab a coin because it was not " original" they should at least slab it and say cleaned like anacs. To charge a person for verification and still not entomb it is just a rip-off. The reasoning behind sending the coin in is verification, not the difference between AT & NT. To leave it up to a grader to say "This guy is a good cust" and "This guy only sends in 6 coins a year" is bias and is smoke & mirrors.....If it is cleaned say so but do not send the coin back in a B.B. stating altered surfaces. Throw it in a slab and let the cust know why. But at least give them something besides NFG. When you sell the coin your cust wants to know if its real..........Thats why I will go with ANA. The "buddy" sys does not work for me.NGC has better ethics.........PCGS will never get my business again. And in the end it really don't matter buy the coin..not the slab!I have seen ICG do better than PCGS after changing hands from a "special" dealer to a guy with a good eye. You get verification and an opinion.Thats it. My advice.....go to a show and see the circus that is tpg. If you know your series you will not be afraid to buy raw.The difference between a dealer and a collector is simple and one word.........Greed. PCGS are dealers NOT collectors. Mark does have a good eye and I could trust him to be my eyes. One of the few, but you pay for that.

sumnom has in the past been a little skeptical of anyone's ability to determine "originality." In reality, toning is not a part of the original mint product, and all toning is in a sense a surface alteration even though it may not be intentional. The quotation marks in my previous post were my attempt to acknowledge that this is a grey area.

I would love to hear any additional thoughts he might have on all this.

Maybe sumnom is one of those coin doctors. :dunno:
