You mean you just looked down and there it was?  Probably not alot of folks even know their scarcity..they just see a penny.

When my nephew was young (he is in his 40's now) he collected them..called them "pickle pennies" because to him, at age 7 or so, that is what the wheat looked like.  The best gift you could give him at that time was a handfull of "pickle pennies".

Yep just laying there, as i always pick up coins that i find laying on the ground and thought this one was going to be a modern penny, nope it's a wheat head

my wife thinks it's funny that i pick up coins from the ground, but as the old saying goes" you never know what you may find"

These coins aren't that rare, 154,370,500 were minted

but still a nice find to brighten my day up

At every place I stop I look in the penny saver jar. I just hate when I see a charity jar and a silver quarter just sitting there on the top! I know it will be turned in as just a quarter, and some shmuck at the salvation army will notice the nice ring of silver and get it.............then I get a coffee. U.T.R. had a bunch of wheaties, I wonder what she did with-em?

I was talking with my nephew once and he said he wished he had  kept all the ones he saved when he was a kid saving his "pickle" pennies.

1949 ... Cool. That's the year I was born :D

I have only found two "wheaties" (or should I say "Pickles"?) in the past 5 or 6 years from circulation.

I found a 1919 in fine condition a few weeks ago. A coworker wanted to trade me for the 1956 he had, but the coolness factor made me keep it (even if both are only worth a nickel).

How cool is it to find an 89 year old coin in circulation (and not one in high grade that was probably stolen from a collection and spent)?
