on the obverse the color is the typical red of the uncirculated coin...

The problem is on the reverse....it has a totally different color....it's almost silver-like...

I don't know....the best answer I have gotten so far is that when the alloys were combined (.950 Copper and .050 tin and zinc) , it wasn't combined well....resulting in the copper staying on the top of the planchet and the tin /zinc laying on the bottom....when it cooled, and the planchet was stamped, that was what it ended up like.

It kind of makes sense, looking at the coin.....the fact that it is so even, is what I like about it.

Makes sense to me. I would be hard pressed to think of any other thing.

The poorly combined alloy thing sounds interesting, and I was thinking it was possibly sealed from air on one side more than the other for a real long time, like flushed stuck against plastic on one side, oxidizing differently.

The copper is typical copper...the reverse, if it were copper and not exposed to air, would still be copper, just more orange...It definitely has a nickel colored reverse. If you look on the Indians' cheek, you can see the same nickel color....so it's definitely that color.

When we were kids, we coated copper pennies with mercury. Could it be something like that? Though I can't imagine anybody trying that with an Indian Head ...
