I do not believe for one minute the TPGs label on First Strike.Whether it be from NGC or PCGSor any other grading co.It is a marketing gimmick and does not do any good for the collecting community.To extricate any additional fee or any premium for the label is bogus in my opinion.It does not change the grade of the coin in any way. ........JMO........

I agree. They are purposefully and inappropriately using a new definition of the term "First Strike." This is very obvious once you learn what can get away with being labled as First Strike - like, half the entire minting or coins minited a half a year earlier. It has NOTHING to do with the widely accepted and used definition of First Strike in the numistmatic arena. Shame on them!

Be careful, Frank, or David Hall et al will try to shut this forum down for bashing a TPG... :faint: IMHO, the lawsuit filed against both PCGS and NGC has merit as not even the US Mint has a marketable definition of "first strike." I'm not a lawyer, but I will prognosticate a quick settlement will be forthcoming with no admission of wrongdoing, an end to FS, cash to the lawyers and free submissions to everyone else. At least that's what I would suggest if I was in a position to advise.

You want to see what a "First Strike" really means ... Now look a bit closer ...  Someone wasn't paying attention. This tells me more than any discussion or any forum thread could. "First Strike" is indeed crap, plain and simple.

Given that the mint is unable to determine which coins were struck first, I can't see how any TPG can figure that out. From what I understand, first sent out from the mint does not equal first struck.

I agree, Smitty. A hit like that should knock that coin to the mid range. What do you think it should be graded, assuming that is the only hit? Do you think it should go as high as MS-66?

Yep, I think a hit like that would bring it down to 65, maybe 66. A hit that drastic on a major focal point just kills the appeal to me. My guess is that it was submitted in an unsearched roll or green monster box, cause no one in there right mind would deem that coin slab worthy, IMO. As the saying goes, 'that coin was graded on a Friday'.... ;)

Why didn't I get the memo on un-opened fed- ex boxes! And first strike eligibility. Not that I give a crap, I knew it was a sham from the beginning but I still like the anniversary reverse proof. I guess if you submit alot of coins you get the inside skinny..........PCGS may get burned on this one. Last edited on 03:25 am by librtyhead |
