Does the toning on this ASE appeal to any one? Does it look natural or would you think AT? It actually toned on the window sill for some unknown reason. Nothing touching it and no chemicals were added. Go figure. I'm thinking about selling it in the future but I won't if it appears faked. What's your opinion? I've had several ASEs tone althought each one is different.

Anything that new should be bright white, even though I truly believe it has toned just as you say, it may be hard to convince anyone else. The purple looks ok, to bad it did'nt fade off to white instead of the reddish brown............Good luck. Last edited on 04:49 am by librtyhead |

I took that pic with my scanner. It has a nice golden tone to it which the scanner doesn't pick up. Something about the ASEs seem to let them tone quicker and more wildly. None of my Morgans ever toned like this while I've had several ASEs do it in a short amount of time. Aren't these 99% silver?

Ah Ha. The high silver content. I thought so. It looks nice in hand. Maybe I'll see about trying to get it slabbed. Probably the only way I'd ever be able to sell it and not have it come back to haunt me. Thanks

I have a few rolls from the mint ... I keep one roll open to play with because I like to touch them. My real coin collection and 99% of my coins are colonials - with the exception of a few pieces they are all circulated and all get touched. I am into the historical artifact aspect of them, which is why I only collect unusual ones with telling damage, oddities, etc. Enjoy your Eagles. I think the SAEs are gorgeous, personally.

I asked 'WHY' because I would like to know what is considered AT. This coin sat on a windowsill with nothing touching it. No chemicals were added. No paper or cloth over it. It was not in a folder or coin book. And it did not happen over night..this sat there for a year. I did nothing to this coin other than sit it on the sill next to my computer. When I bought it, it was blast white. It just slowly changed color. How does that constitute AT? Because a coin turns a color you don't like? (This picture was done on a scanner so it's not as colorful as if I took a closeup with a camera.) I always thought AT meant chemicals, whether liquid, solid or gas, were in contact with a coin and produced unnatural color patterns quickly. The Neon Colored Morgans strike me as AT. While beautifully colored, I don't believe they happened naturally. (Perhaps it's because I've found websites were you can buy chemicals to change coins to whatever color you want in a matter of minutes.) If you consider the coin to be butt-ugly, that's fine. But what makes this AT? What is AT? Or better yet, what is NT? I'm beginning to think all toned coins should be considered AT, the difference being some are just better looking than others. I think AT = intent, there are some sharks that like to make a profit on toned coins, hey what the hell if thats what you like. Me I like nice detail, and originality, some coins could not possibly be white! Is that also AT or would that be AW (artificial white), I don't know as I only sell to get funds for an upgrade. But I have also seen some wonderfull toners that only enhance the design and bring out the beauty of the coin.

I may sell it some day....I may not. If I do, it won't be anytime soon. As for AT = intent, I've always considered Artificially Toned coins those that were chemically treated as to tone rapidly (minutes, hours, days). I have a complete of Unc Roosevelts ('46 to '64) in a Whitman album that are slowly toning. If they were to tone nicely, and I need to sell them, that would be a plus but even if that were my intent, I wouldn't consider them AT. I know this has hashed out over and over on many forums and I am not an expert on spotting AT coins so if this one looks AT to everyone here and a few on the CU Coin Forum, I won't bother to try and eBay it in the future. I'll just enjoy it myself. I know what I have but perception is everything. Thanks, Lee
