That is a very good article, sumnom. It tells us who the legislative enemy is--Sen. Lott. It also reveals the inside conflict in the Treasury Department. I especially liked the account of the ad that was pulled.

The answer to the dollar-bill lobby is increased production of $2 bills. The shift in production would decrease BEP job losses and ease acceptance of the dollar coin by the general public.

It is a good article, isn't it?

I think the 2-dollar solution is a good one. Everybody wins.

Do you think people are right in guessing that the ramped up production of dollar coins these days is a precursor to forcing an end to the dollar bill?

No. I don't think most legislators care enough to pass a bill discontinuing production of dollar bills.

Most legislators probably don't care enough, but I personally wish that's what would happen.  They'd save a lot of money producing the coins, which last a lot longer than the paper dollars do.  Just my opinion.

Let the dollar bill die.

Yea, verily.

If Canada, the UK, the European Union, Japan and others can stop producing small bills and replace them with coins, so can we. It ain't rocket surgery, folks!

1.  Phase in the gold dollar coins. They last 30 years.

2.  Phase out the dollar bill.  They last 22 months and look like "a used handkerchief" by the end of 12 months.

3. Get the Bureau of Engraving and Printing guys new jobs making the new colored money.

4.  Let the cotton guys make computer paper.

5.  Have the paper mill "mysteriously" burn down, but find jobs for its employees.

6.  Most importantly....  Phase out Trent Lott.:D

Sorry but I like the paper dollar. I dont like carrying coins in my pockets period.

When i was in Asia where they have these low denomination coins, I was forced to carry them around as spending money. Weighing down my pockets, afraid I'd lose some on a bus, in a taxi, restaurant...anywhere I sat down.

It's one thing to lose a nickle...dime...quaters, but I dont want to lose a few dollar coins in their stead when I'm forced to carry them in my pocket instead of my wallet.

I used to be in favor of switching to the dollar coin.  That was until Monday, when I went to the post office to get some presidential dollars (which I hadn't seen until then).  It's bad enough to use presidents on coins, but to have Washington look like some online avatar is a little too much for my stomach.

I've got to tell you:  If that's the best the mint can come up with, they should stick with paper.  At least the paper bill has the decency to decompose over time.  Would that the presidential dollars rotted away so easily!

At this point, the only way dollar coins should be produced is if the Mint brings back the Liberty design.

Actually, I was speaking of Liberty generally, so the Morgan definitely qualifies.  ::thumbs::

I do have to say that I think the Morgan is a bit "full-figured" for modern aesthetic tests.  I shudder to think what the Mint would do to "modernize" it.  ::bigvomit::
