I sent a roll of the new golden dollars to a friend in Canada, and the package arrived there empty today.  The side of the envelope was torn open. ::vsad:: The friend is going to the P.O. tomorrow to check it out.

No, but I would have insured it had I known this would happen.  I'm not sure how the insurance process works when mailing coins to Canada, but would have insured it anyway.

They were sent in a bubble envelope with the heavy duty clear packing tape.

If I would have insured it, it probably wouldn't have been stolen!

Bubble envlopes is what i use

Ever heard of strapping tape?

The brand i use is called Scotch Strapping tape for heavy jobs made by 3M

Very strong and thick tape perfect for shipping packages

Wal-mart, office max and other stores sell this tape

Hi Susan,

I went to the post office today. They said to contact your post office and file a claim. Even thou it was not insured they should have a policy that they will cover the package up to a certain dollar amount. The way the post office up here explained it to me, is that the U.S. post office should cover it because it was sent fromt the U.S., if it was sent from here the CDN post office would cover the loss. They also explained that up here ALL mail etc is covered up to $100.00 insurance, after all you are paying for a service and they have to guarantee it.

 I still have the padded envelope if you require it to show the post office, BTW the post office up here said not to give them it to keep or they might accidently lose it.....

Update:

Went to the U.S. post office today and they told me they do not automatically insure letters unless they're sent Express Mail.  They said the recipient would have to do an inquiry in the Canadian post office (which he already did).  They said my letter, which was sent Air Letter Post, is untrackable and they couldn't do anything to help me.

Next time I'll send it insured, which I found out requires a signature at the recipient's address.  Live and learn.  Hopefully Shimmy or his family will be at home to be able to sign for it when it arrives.
