Well, since I just saw this on TV I guess it's alright for me to talk about this piece of equipment.

(See link in post below)

I saw this system while I was in Iraq just about a year ago.  Basically, long story short, it finds snipers with one shot.  Add an automatic weapon and it returns fire to the snipper within seconds.

There is more info about this on the internet, and like I said, there is a show on TV about it,
Ray

Awe!  That's incredible!  I would think it would save a "lot" of lives!  Is that kind of the way the modern soldier gets his equipment, they see what's causing the most threat, then work out a solution?  I like it and it seems to make sense.  I only wish they could figure this out before it takes lives.  Nice going MP!  And thanks for sharing that!  ::thumbs::

It's on right now, "Future weapons" is the show name... But I'm here to tell you, we had this in theater a year ago.

I saw the show a few weeks ago. What a help in time of trouble!

You said it, and if it saves only one life it is worth the cost of development.

The system not only gives you a visual location of the shot fired (In a clockwise orientation of the vehicle) but a verbal as well.

"Shot fired at three o'clock" or something to that effect.

"Future Weapons" is a great show. It had a story of remote-controlled vehicles used to look into suspicious vehicles parked on roadsides and a robot arm to disarm IEDs. They showed footage of what appeared to be three 105mm artillery shells in the back seat of a car used as an IED.

I liked the idea of a remote-controlled M2 on the top of an APC, also. ::thumbs::

I have seen those robots first hand, and even seen them in action placing C4 to detonate an IED that we found. They are very cool, I would probably change my MOS to either EOD or UAV if I could, but this late in the game, they will not allow the crossover. I do enjoy my current occupation though(Communications) and probably would not want to give it up for anything. Above all, it's a pleasure serving this great nation and you wonderful people.

Thanks for the opportunity,
Ray

Hi Ray, how was Thanksgiving?  Are you guys just about out of coffee?  I'm hoping to get another box sent within the next week or so.  I have a question I'd like you to answer if you can.  Wayne and I were talking the other night about these damn roadside bombs going off.  Can't we come up with some sort of signal detonator that sends out hundreds of sound waves a mile ahead of our troops, that would set these bombs off before you ever got there?  Maybe even have it have a sensitive dial, so men on foot could adjust it for much closer, and the men in vehicles could set the dial up to a mile away.  The bomb is going off anyway.  Let's figure out how to set it off BEFORE the troops get there.........

Fox, thank you for thinking this deep, I can't really say what our counter procedures are but I can assure you we are proactive in defeating these things. As with anything in war as we adapt, so does the enemy, then we adapt again and so on. If you look at the pictures of our current uparmor vehicles you can see all the stuff mounted to stop IED's.

Our biggest threat is the command detonated IED's which means someone is at the end of a long wire watching us approach and they detonate it when were are within proximity.

The only way to stop that is to stop the person at the end of the wire.

I would love to sit down and talk this topic over with you but to post it on an open forum would be folish of me (OPSEC).

Thanks for the question,
Ray
