ALCON,

Thanks for coming in and seeing how I am doing.  As you can tell, I spend little time here at 24, the truth is, I spend little time on the computer at all.  I do check my e-mail and respond often but leisure time is few and far in-between these days.

I started a study group for the soldiers which takes up a few hours Mon, Wed, and Friday evenings.  The 1SG said it is really helping the soldiers so I will continue to head that up.  Thus far, we have had four soldiers become promotable, and two win the Soldier of the Month, and NCO of the month board.  We started our second month last Monday.

I also decided to go back to college.  Soldiers have 4,500 dollars tuition assistance to many colleges.  If we do not take advantage of it, then we are letting a great deal go.  At this point, four of the five in my section are doing college or at least signed up waiting for their class to start.  The other two soldiers have been OPCONED out to other sections so I do not control their days.

We have a Platoon Physical Training test coming up on the 16th so we have also been spending a lot of time preparing for that.  Though, most of you know that my platoon is filled with a bunch of weight lifting PT buffs.  We all have goals and so far we are meeting these goals.  Hopefully before we leave here our PT average will be in the high 290's (300 being the max).  Right now, three of the five of us can max the PT test, I will probably come in at a 270 and our young guy will probably bring us a 240-250.  The standards are harder for the young soldiers and he has let himself go a bit.

Above all we are doing well, taking it one day at a time.  It's like ground hog day, much like being in Prison.  We work, go to chow, have gym time, and people barking orders at us.  We do work in movie night (We have a white box painted on the wall and an over head projector).

Thanks for looking in and seeing how we are doing.

Ray

Thanks for the update, Ray! Great about college and the study group - good stuff! Be safe and update again soon. Good luck on that Physical Training test, too.

HEY......That's a good update Ray!  You have more "normal" time that I thought you'd have over there.  I have to laugh about the "barking orders" part though.  We get that here too you know!  What classes are you taking in College, can you tell us?  I checked out your personal list of items sent, it looks good!  Some people are really coming through for you, I'm sure happy to see that.  I didn't recognize the names, but my "guess" would be some Bikers!!  Take care, and do check in when you can.

Yes, it is true, I have more normal time than my last two tours over here, fact is, I have not yet been on a mission outside the wire, my day will be here soon though.  At this point I am in a Management position for those that do not know what a Platoon Sergeant is, I have five sections and about 30-40 soldiers that I manage at any given time.  I actually have an attachment of another 20 or so soldiers (I can't say exact numbers on the internet but these are ballpark).  The unit I am in supports other units that leave the wire daily, currently we manage six units, soon to be 10 units.  My last two deployments I was the unit leaving the wire, and everyone knows I did my time on the road, I have a Combat Action Badge to show for it.  This time, I take care of soldiers and ensure these units have what they need.

Filling my days does help the time go by faster.  This tour being the longest I have ever been on (15 months) I am doing my best to keep my days full by setting the example, taking care of my soldiers and our mission.  For the past 15 years my motto has been "Mission, Men and Me" for that reason, I am far behind on my civilian college.  I have an opportunity to take some classes and possibly complete an Associates "Associate of Applied Science in Applied Technology (AAS-AT)" is the degree plan I am shooting for.

Thanks you two for checking in on me, I'll be around and please feel free to use my e-mail and drop me a line if I am gone to long.  I haven’t forgotten about you all, I'm just a busy beaver!

Thanks,
Ray

libertyhead, do you mean after retirement or when I redeploy?

After retirement I am going to putmy energy back into my family who has supported me so faithfully all these years. We have some plans but as we learned in the military, BE FLEXABLE!

As for when I get out of this deployment, I will have only three short years left until I am able to retire. I will do my best for those around me and my mission.

Thanks,
Ray

Ray, you starting to taste retirement? :)   I remember talks of that from our CU forum days.  Good for you, thanks again for serving and updating us. Anything big going on in Iraq that you can report on?
