Yes, you read that right, I ran a half marathon this morning, 13.1 miles. I had three goals, 1) Complete the 13.1 miles, 2) go the whole way without stopping, 3) Complete the run under 2 hours. I have never run that far/long and I average about 10 minute miles so I had doubts from the beginning about the time. I knew I would complete it even if I walked so my first goal was accomplished before I started the race. I figured I had about a 50% chance of running the whole way since I had done ruck marches for 12 miles in the past, a lot of them at an Airborne shuffle. I managed to run the entire route. As for the third goal, I realized at mile 10 that I had a possibility to accomplish the goal and found myself cross the line at 1:54.46, I completed the run under two hours. I even impressed myself this morning. I really am in the best shape of my life right now thanks to the help of some of you, I will improve the whole time I am here. I still have 9 months to go, who knows what I can accomplish. I deployed at 198 pounds, I am currently below 180lbs. My goal is to be at 170 when I come home on leave. Before this deployment is over, I hope to hit about 165, so I can rebound to 175 and be at my max weight (174).

I finished my first on line college course with a B (I think, we have not received our grades yet), I hope due to my class participation the professor bumps my grade to an A. I enjoyed the class and will pick up another one after R&R. I am going to try to have an associates degree before I retire, I think since I am not in the Infantry, I will be able to accomplish this goal.

Other than that, all is well, I am due a rating scheme and my 1SG said he has some bullets for it, these are the bullets he sent for me:

o performed exceptionally as a platoon sergeant; flawlessly deployed his platoon to OIF 07-09 and ensured every Soldier was prepared for a 15 month deployment

o spearheaded a company board study group; mentored seven NCOs and Soldiers that averaged a 149 promotion score and produced one Battalion NCOQ and two SOQs

o enhanced his platoon's survivability in combat by ensuring they were 100% trained on rollover drills, indirect fire drills, and escalation of force (EOF) procedures

o injected Tangerine Training into the weekly battle rhythm and decreased commo problems by over 40%; trained over 100 Soldiers on communications equipment

o volunteered to serve as the unit's Enhancement PT Instructor; produced a training regimen for 10 Soldiers that significantly increased their physical capabilities

o sacrificed personal time and encouraged Soldiers to grow in the financial management arena; efforts led to five Soldiers enrolling in Peace University

And my favorite:

o an absolute must select for promotion in the secondary zone; will be an outstanding asset to any unit as a First Sergeant

I guess my hard work has paid off. I will not get looked at for the next rank advancement until after February 2009, hopefully I get picked up first look (In the secondary zone). I will then retire as a Master Sergeant.

I have been very busy these days, I try to check in every day but sometimes I just can't find the time.  I will catch up when this deployment is over though.  I will keep you all updated on my life as a Soldier in modern day Iraq.

Ray
