Good thinking, Aethelred.  I'd like to thank Ray for his service as well.  Thank you so much, Ray.  We need more men like you in this country.

Thanks, it's amazing how much a soldier will do for his/her country without being appreciated, but to hear a thank you every once in awhile reminds us why we do what we do.

I hope that made sense :)

Ray,

Thanks for taking the time to give us somewhat of an idea of what it is like over there in Iraq. I might have missed it in reading the discussion so far, but is military service going to be your career? I have lots more questions.... just thought I would start with this one.

Wishing you & your family a Merry Christmas.

bgrice,
Come April 23 2007 I will have 15 years active duty. I plan on completing at least 20, but I'm looking at 22 right now. There is alot of factors that will cause me to stay longer so who knows. I'll do it till I get board, I heard we can do more than 30 years now ;)

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and yours,
Ray

Off to a couple more questions Ray.....

I read in one of the other threads where you said that you didn't want to say/write things that may get you in trouble. I am guessing there is some sort of Code of Ethics(or something like that) just like every corporation has, but are there direct subjects that you cannot discuss? I understand the importance of not divulging information that could cause harm to those who are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan & other places, but are you all briefed as to what you can discuss & what you cannot before you come back to the states? It might help me to get an idea of what is(or is not) out of bounds. Just by reading this part of the forum it's obvious that many(myself included) want to hear what's going on from someone who has been there. I ignore press releases just because I really don't believe them and I don't have any close friends who are in the service, so I hope you don't mind me beating around the bush to get the soldier's side to what's going on.

Questions like....

1)Every day I read where 50-100(just a number) Iraquis are found in some sort of mamed/tortured death.  Is it more from terrorists or the secular groups of people who just hate each other enough to do such things? Do these things happen in front of you all or is it happening more behind the scenes and the bodies are dumped to be found?

2)Did you consider every Iraqui(man, woman, child) you came in contact with as a potential enemy? In other words, if you all were approached was it automatic to point a weapon at them or did you just use your best judgement?

Enough for now...

As for what I am able to talk about, they generally state that anything we say to anyone we must say, "I feel" "I believe" "My feelings are" and then we can say just about anything we want. Of course we should not comment on current tactics, nor should we speak of current operations. That said, I will answer everything I feel is declassed, and when in doubt, I will go towards not answering the questions. Keep in mind, I'm not into politics, nor do I have an opinion on why we are at war, and I defiantly do not have an opinion on all the conspiracy theories about oil and whatnot.

Question 1: Personally I have no idea who or why they are doing it, but it happens then we find the bodies. As you said, they are "dumped" to be found. We are doing everything we can to prevent the violence. The frame of mind for the average Iraqi is defiantly different than that of an American. Think of the worst poverty stricken city in America, multiply by 10 and that is the average city in Iraq. Sure there are nice cities, but the suppressions of many generations pays a toll on ones frame of mind. They grow up from childhood in violence, that’s practically all they know.

Question 2) I personally considered EVERY Iraqi I came in contact with a potential enemy. This is not just from paranoia but from knowing someone during the day, then catching him laying IED's at night, or stealing Intel from your base and selling it to the insurgents. Even the children are dangerous over there. Don't get me wrong, everyone is treated with respect (Respect is HUGE over there) but when the lights go out, I reach for my gun and put my back against the wall. We were/are very careful to NOT point our weapon at anyone, unless we intend to kill that person. So, no we do not make it common practice to point our weapon. Our Rules of Engagement stated exactly the elevations of violence that we are authorized to use... Pointing the weapon is not the first, nor the second thing we do. Usually after the first or second rule, they do what we say.

Thanks for the questions,
Ray

Very much an older time for me and certainly a different war, but I understabd that 100%. I am now, happy, I didn't stay long enough to get my mind hardened on the children......but it was close.

I understand it's a harsh way of thinking, but truthfully it saves lives. We in NO way treat the children or anyone for that matter with any sort of disrespect, we just don't let them behind us.

I'm sure anyone can understand that,
Ray
