They tried to get me to go officer, I would not bite, then they tried to get me to go warrent... I still would not bite... they tried to get me to go to Brigade... Nope :D I like it down on the line.

I'm sure your brother will be very happy when he retires (Mo money is always nice no matter who you are). I can pretty much plan my retirement now, I don't plan on making Master Sergeant, even though I will be looked at, this rank we can deny when offered... Why deny you ask? Good question, when we are promoted we must volenteer to stay on for a certain amount of years.. so, if they offer E-8 at 19 years, I will have to do at least 21 years... Maybe I don't want to do 21... at that point I would decline...

As for how many years I'll do... Who knows, right now I'm thinking 20, but we'll see what they offer me and what position I am holding a the time :D

When I was an E-5 I was approached by my Company and Battalion Commanders and offered an appointment to West Point. I was thrilled, honored, shocked and a whole range of other emotions. But, when I sat down and really looked into what it meant, I ultimately turned it down. I would have been required to spend 2-years in a military prep school, then go from there to the Point for 4-years and then serve a minimum 6-year committment to the Army.

At the young age of 22 being asked to make a 12-year committment just wasn't something I could realy grasp and so I declined. That was 24 years ago. My how time flies.

Hey DR, did you retire or do you time and ETS? Thank you for your service (Not sure if I knew you served).

12 years is a HUGE decision to make, I didn't even know I was a lifer until after I did 9 years or so. At that point I re-enlisted for 6 that would land me at 15 and at that point I realized I would retire from the Army.

I have no regrets, I'm pretty happy with the decisions I've made, things could be better but they sure could be worse.

:D

It looks like you are taking care of your family, just think when you retire you will still be young and can move on to do whatever you want. Some people never look at the future. Good luck, I kinda wished I had stayed in the service but there is no sense in looking back and kicking myself.::thumbs::...................

Thanks Libertyhead, I have the opportunity to retire at the ripe old age of 39. After that, who knows... Hopefully there is something in Numismatics I can do :D

I agree, it's best to look towards the future then to dwell on what could have been in the past. By all means, learn from the past but use that information to produce a brighter future.

Thanks,
Ray

:D

I did 3 years active and ETS'd.

Did my entire tour (after Basic/AIT) in Charlie Company, 2nd Battallion 77th Armor, 3rd Brigade (Triple Threat), 9th Infantry Division, I-Corps at Ft Lewis Washington.

I was an M-88A1 Commander. My crew and I were responsible for tank recovery operations for our Company of 16, M60-A1, main battle tanks.

ETS'd at the rank of Sgt. E-5 in 1983.

That's my vehicle with me on the far left in the center photo below.

Typical operation for us.
