Mr Paranormal, our discussions in your time travel thread got me thinking about fate, and destiny and such. Hope you do not mind that I have started this discussion here. In the book Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thorton Wilder, a witness to a bridge collapse, in which 5 people die examines just why these 5 people were chosen to die. Was it fate? Destiny? God's will? Do you believe in fate? Or any of the above? Is our life predestined from the moment we are born? Do you feel our life is mapped out in such a way that whatever happens, bad or good cannot be changed? It does make one wonder. I read this book back in high school (about 150 years ago) and should read it again. I am not sure we can change our future or destiny. Whether our whole life is preordained is beyond me. Has my date of death be preset? Is this why psychics can "see" our future or past..because it is already set? I have more to say, but I'd like to see where this discussion goes before I comment more.

I too would like to see where this goes. I've always wanted to know if you can actually change life's path. I've know people who have had psychic readings, and the issues that were talked about happened, to the letter. I've got some thoughts and ideas, but I also want to hear others thoughts..........

BUT..are you actually changing life's path..or just fufilling your destiny? Maybe it is in your destiny to take a different road, thus changing the path of your life.

Thought of something this afternoon that I would like to add. Here are a couple of stories, both related to 9/11..and both to people I knew. First, my brother's brother-in-law was ticketed on one of the flights that crashed on 9/11. He had business in California. A few days before, the meetings were postponed for a couple weeks. Thus, he did not travel and was not on his flight. Second, I was, at the time, aquainted with someone who lost 3 family members in one of the planes. The only reason they were on the flight is that they were visiting from California, and decided to extend their vacation a few days to see my aquaintance, as he was due for surgery. If not for that , they would have flown home the week before. Was this fate? Coincidence? Their destiny..for one to not be on the flight, and three to be there? What do you think?

Marie i is so good to see someone beside myself starting a thread this is a rare treat for me. I must honestly say you have made an excellent choice, I can see throuh this thread you start how much what is considered paranormal phenomena intermingles with our everday lives unnoticed by most. After reading your thread I got to thinking about the unseen unknown possibilities that lie behind every choicewe make. after all when we make a choice what many in life never relize is many choices have different outcomes many times influenced by unseen factors. For example when we decide to get up in the morning to go to work we don't always know we will arrive on time or at all. Your example about 911 showed this very clearly. it appears you have chosen to discuss an area that truley encompasses endless possibilities. i like you and others have more to share but would first like to see the direction this goes. Thank you ever so much for starting this thread.

Thus, he did not travel and was not on his flight. Do we even know how many times we've escaped death ourselves?? How many times have we each made choices, never knowing the different out come that could have been? I think it's all in Gods book! Yes, I know you may not have wanted have God brought into the thread, but we keep saying we want to wait and see what others are thinking, well, lets start thinking!! IF in fact, God has a book, then nothing we do will change the outcome. IF however, there isn't such a book, then I'm still not so sure we have a choice to actually change our OVERALL outcome. Minute by minute choices, yes. I choose not to step in front of that on coming truck. But if someone gets into my house at night and kills me, it wasn't really my choice. This now brings up a subject I've often talked about. If my destiny is already planned, then why pray?? Does my choice TO pray change my outcome? Or, does my choice NOT to pray, change my outcome. Was my choice already made for me whether to pray or not???

foxglovepress said Yes, I know you may not have wanted have God brought into the thread Not to start anything fox I just wanted to point out that if you look at the verse below Gods world and the paranormal are very much intertwined Heb 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Mr P. Thanks for the compliment. I just wish more people would visit your forum and respond to this..there are many intelligent people on 24 who I think would have much to say about this. So it may just be you me and Foxy right now. Wonder if one of us should link to this thread in the open forum, to direct folks here? Foxy, as for the prayer thing...I am a bad one to speculate. I am not religeous, and really do not pray, in the faith based sense of the word. As for the psychic readings, I have been, and had amazing results. BUT..how much is self fufilling profecy? If we are told there will be a certain outcome, do we unconsiously change ot behavior to meet the outcome we are expecting to happen? When I first read the book I cited here, I very much believed in fate and destiny, and that our life path is predetermined. We cannot change it. There is another movie, from the 80's (yes I am dating myself here). A pure fluff film called Made in Heaven, starring Kelly MacGillis and Timothy Hutton. It is hard to describe it without spoiling the story, but it is basically two souls who meet and fall in love in Heaven. She goes to earth as a new baby. He feels lost without her. He is allowed to go back, and given 30 years to find her (neither remember their time in heaven). If he finds her, they will be together forever. Destiny? Divine intervention?

This subject, got me thinking about soul mates!

Foxy, I do not mind the mention of God here. I mean, God's will IS part of the title of this thread.

I don't believe in any grand design, or fulfilling destiny or fate, and I'm an atheist so "gods will" means nothing to me. I believe in chaos, there is no reason, or design or pre-determined paths. The universe is just a huge endless swirling chaotic dance that we play an almost insignificant part in. Because we are humans and we think we play an important part in the universe doesn't mean we do. Most people I talk to disagree, mainly I have found because the idea is too disturbing and uncomfortable for their ego's to accept. When you leave your house in the morning you might get struck by lighting or you might work out the meaning of life on the way to work. There is no pattern apart from the pattern we superimpose on the world to try and make sense of it.

There has been a few times that Fate has thrown it's fickle finger in my face. When I was 14 yrs old a friend of mine went fishing with Gerry Vezina down by the dam, I was supposed to go with them that day but had Confirmation classes to go to. Gerry drowned that day slipping from Randy Russels hand to slip in under the dams intake. He was found 4 months later completley stricken of color, bloated and lifeless. Another time in high school I almost took a ride in a very cool 68 Camaro owned by Jeff Berry, that car got wound around a tree killing Jeff and his passenger but leaving the girl in the backseat paralized from the waist down. Once when leaving a bonfire party I almost caught a ride with Marshal Nolin in the back of a pickup truck they took a corner in Bear Brook state park and Marshal got thrown from the back into a tree and got de-capitated. Again when I was on a destroyer in the North Atlantic we were doing a re-fuel at sea They shot over a line and I grabbed it and tried to hook it on the standard to haul over the next heavy wire to bring in the re-fuel line. The wire tightened and snapped in the rough sea whizzing by my head grazing my cheek. It could have taken my head off. Destiny has a way of letting some go and some to stay. It is the ones that still think they are alive that make me believe in Ghosts and late dark night thoughts of what may have been. Last edited on 07-02-2008 01:51 am by librtyhead |
