I believe the answer is a matter of perspective. From God's perspective there are no surprises, there is no time and the choices have already been made and the outcome is already set(again, it's not an outcome from His perspective it just is).

From our perspective there are choices before us and various consequences for those choice. Looking backwards we say that these were the options, we made a particular choice and realized a particular set of consequence and imagine that if we had made another choice we would have experienced another set of consequence. In the end a choice was made and the consequences were experienced.

There is a Biblical principle embodied in the versus "and we know that all things work together for the God to those that love God and are called according to His purpose". To some extent this means that God has an ultimate goal for His children (transformation into the image of Christ) and regardless of the choices we make the goal will be realized.

If this is accurate some would ask why bother making "right" choices. I believe the answer is making right choices accelerates the process and has an eternal consequence with respect to the magnitude of the image of Christ that will be expressed through us. The Apostle Paul seems to allude to this in 1 Corinthians 15:40 ~ 42.

So as far as destiny is concerned from God's perspective it is finished but from our perspective it is being worked out in time.
