I'm a Civil War re-enactor, and one of my absolute favorite places to be is Gettysburg. It's reputedly one of the most haunted areas in the country, and I believe it. I've experienced several sightings and other experiences there. One of my favorite things to do is to dress in my 19th-century clothes and walk the battlefield. Everywhere, anywhere...the look on people's faces when they see me get out of a car in hoop skirts, parasol, and mitts is a sight to behold, let me tell you. I have a friend who looks so authentic that, whenever he comes upon a tour group on the battlefield anywhere near dusk, since he often comes from out of the woods rather than on the paths, people think he's a ghost. He has this trick of stopping near a group and just leaning back against a tree and watching them. More often than not, someone will approach him, wide-eyed, and tentatively poke a finger at his shoulder, half-expecting to pass right through. It's quite funny to watch. I have another friend who had her picture taken by a photographer who uses some of the lenses that Matthew Brady used. She was out on the battlefield (for those of you who know the place, it was near the Point of Woods where Lee met his sadly depleted forces as they straggled back after Longstreet's Assault - aka "Pickett's Charge") in her period garb. It was late afternoon, and the light was incredible. She stood out on the field, gazing out as if looking for someone, as the picture was taken. When she got the print back, she looked, well, as if she'd seen a ghost...because she had. I watched the picture being taken, and she was quite alone. But there on the print, as clear and solid as she was, stood a soldier. Drooping with fatigue, one hand leaning his gun against the ground, and the other hand inches from my friend's shoulder. I've seen the picture, and it's startling. The story is told, also, that if one stands on Little Round Top, the site of the fiercest fighting on the second day of the battle, just after dark, and looks down into the Valley of Death toward Devil's Den, one might see a light moving slowly over the field at about knee height. Every so often, the light will stop, dip toward the ground, hover there a few moments, then rise back up and move on. It's said that this is a Confederate soldier, searching the faces of the dead and dying lying there at the foot of the hill, searching for his lost comrades. Gods, I miss it...got to get back there. Soon.

Yes to both. I saw the picture being taken, and I saw the completed print. I know the photographer; he wouldn't do something like this (i.e., a double exposure) just for the shock value. I believe it to be genuine.

Methinks you and Hambone will have some stuff to talk about! Did you read any more of his stuff in his forum here? He's pretty experienced with this kind of thing.

Radio talkshow host Michael Medved has mention a few times on his show the night he and a buddy slept on the battlefield around 30 years ago. He said around midnight while they lay in their sleeping bags they heard noises coming and then witnessed a group of soldiers in period gear rush past them! He believes they were ghosts.

Could very well be...just don't let the rangers catch you on the battlefield after 10:30, unless you're part of a sanctioned encampment ;) They enforce the park rules pretty thoroughly. Thirty years ago it was probably ok. Just don't do it today. Which reminds me of a funny story... There was a time when a ranger had stopped a tourist that was relic-hunting near an encampment on the field. Relic-hunting is specifically and strictly prohibited at Gettysburg; any ranger that catches anyone with a metal detector will quite speedily confiscate it. Well, this tourist decided he wanted to play with the ranger, so he got a little attitude. He had his back to the ranger, still using the metal detector, smarting off at the guy just doing his job... ...until he turned around and saw an even dozen very large men dressed in period garb, standing silently behind the ranger, arms folded. The tourist decided at that point to give up his metal detector *wikkid grin*

That is soooo eerie! I always had this feeling that I died at Gettysburg during Pickett's charge (although sometimes I think it was Antietam) But I probably just watched Ken Burn's miniseries too many times.

Hi Erinna, thanks for that post. Gettysburg is definitely on my list of places to go. I was there as a kid, many years ago, but didnt think of the ghosts then. There are lots of videos and pix on the 'net about the place and it is truly amazing. I wonder...do you have to get permission, or attempt to, from teh National Park Service to do an investigation there? Especially an over-nighter? I mean, at the battle fields of course ;)

There is currently an intensive project underway - and has been for several years - to restore much of the battlefield at Gettysburg to its 1860s state. The preservationists want it to be as much like it was at the time of the battle as is possible, even to the extent of studying photographs and taking the vegetation back to what it looked like then. Obviously this isn't completely possible; they're not going to shave down the trees so that they are the same size as they were back then, and the monuments and roads are an obvious addition. But large tracts of the battlefield are being restored, and therefore are off-limits to anyone but restoration personnel. Also, as I stated in my relic-hunting story, the closing time of the park is most strictly enforced. It is, however, possible to get permission to stay on parts of the battlefield. Usually this happens only around the time of the actual battle re-enactment, which takes place the weekend in July closest to July 3 (the final day of the battle in 1863). Re-enactors encamp on the field during that weekend, but not often at other times. I think you can apply to the park service and ask. I'm sure there's a list of regulations and places that are off-limits as long as your arm; however, if you're part of a known group and respect the rules, I think (but don't quote me) that it's possible. If you go, be sure not to miss several things: The Round Tops, of course; Devils Den (I still get spooked there around dusk); Sachs bridge; the Angle; Monument Row; the Point of Woods; and the eternal flame at the north end of the battlefield. I've always felt friendly, welcoming presences at the top of Little Round Top, aching sadness at Monument Row, Sachs Bridge is quite simply the spookiest place I've ever been, especially after dark, and the eternal flame monument is peaceful and happy. Can you tell I miss being there? It's been about three years and I can't wait to go back.

I think Philadelphia Ghost Hunters Alliance did a thing on the bridge. I know I've seen pictures of it with tons of orbs and stuff. And Devils Den is quite famous for it's hauntings. I really want to go check those two places out especially. There is a website I used to go to quite a bit devoted strictly to G'burg and it's haunts. I cant remember it now and cant find it by google, but i'll keep trying. I think somone by the name of Kathy runs it, or ran it. she's real big in to paranormal/civil war stuff and centers, or used to anyway, he website around there. Have you seen the video which shows the apparitions coming out of the woods at G'burg? they'll come out and go back in, disappear...it's really cool. I can try to find it for you sometime if you havent seen it. I wish Valley Forge was "more haunted" since thats close to where my mom lives. But, being as there were no battles fought there, it's not overly active like G'burg. Oh well. ;)

I think this is the video about Gettysburg you are referring to: http://ghoststudy.com/new6/new/gettysburg13.htm Be advised, even at work with a T1, it took quite a while to load. It is worth the wait, though, as even the inner skeptic in me was aghast (aghost maybe?).
