Cows.  OK, so I live in Andalucia (South of Spain, which is pretty much a fruit growing zone (tropical climate) and no grass to speak of, so the no cows bit is no real surprise.  But I do miss em!
Apparently up North where they do have the green stuff in abundance, they have cows.

We saw some BULLS once on the way to Madrid, but we won't talk about that!

And Branston pickle, and nice biscuits, and horlicks, and marmite, and sherbet, and trifles, and toffee and gravy granules, and PIES.  God how I miss PIES!

(sorry, I think I am having one of those nostalgic days!)

Backs to the cows,  actually I have never seen any pigs here either, which is strange as most of the meat in the butchers here is pork!  Must keep them up North too along with the sheep and cows I guess!

Ha ha ha ha! You do make me chuckle. We're quite lucky, as we can still get Branston pickle. Ham rolls just wouldn't be the same without it. We can pretty much get most things... but they do tend to be more expensive. That doesn't bother us, as we try to stick to local produce anyway.

But no, we don't have any cows or pigs either. But we did have a herd of camels living nearby when we first moved over last year. Haven't seen snails either, come to think of it.

But then this island is very dry. We're closer to Africa than Spain (60km from Morocco), and the landscape here is very stark. But it's really fertile. We're growing our own tomoateos, and getting more than we can eat. We've also just starting growing chillies... because you just can't get hot ones here! Those two seem to be doing okay - but the sunflowers, and the runner beans got eaten by a combination of our puppy, and the geckos that live in our garden.

 Tell me about it!

Our dog has taken to snitchin' bits off our Hazel tree (less than 2ft tall) when she is sulkin' (when we have all gone out without her!)

I had suspected 'Bugs' until I saw 'Dog Puke' in the yard, (with whole hazel leaves in it!)

hmm!

Just out of curiousity, wouldn't a Spanish empanada be similar to a pastie?

Or are you missing fruit pies?

Sorry if Texan doesn't translate well into the Queen's English...

You are on the ball there Cmead!

Empanada are cetainly like Pasties, but generally full of tuna and tomates.  Good but jusyt not the same as a good ol' steak and kidney pie!  And as far as friut pies go, well, never seen one here.

I don't mean to sound like a whinging pom...far from it.  the benefits of living here far outweight the small losses in british habits.

Just that, from time to time, you get to miss a few things.  They blow over, and you forget about them.

But heck, now you mention it, a good ol' apple pie would just cruise right now.
I would make one, but my success rat withj baked products is pretty low. I am good for most things 'active,' but 'cooking' isn't one of them! LOL

Personally I'm not a pie person - but hubby is. But now you've started talking about fruit pies... and I've thought about rhubarb crumble. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Hi Pussycat - yes... a dog's "remains" will always tell the tale, won't it?! Little buG*ers!

Anyway... am off to hunt through more threads... and I'll leave you with the famous dancing 'nana!

I just saw this thread, and I wondered how long it would be before Marmite came up. It was in the second post.
