Seven hurt as Running of the Bulls begins
  • Large crowds expected as festival begins on weekend
  • Start of first run delayed as police clear streets of drunken revelers

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) -- The Running of the Bulls, fueled by huge doses of adrenaline and with equally generous lashings of alcohol, began Saturday in the narrow streets of Pamplona, Spain.

A fighting bull takes a corner during the first Running of the Bulls on Saturday.

An Australian was gored in the buttock, and another runner, a Spaniard from Navarra, was hurt in the shoulder -- among seven people injured on the traditional start day of the festivities.

"Injuries have been relatively light," said Jose Aldaba, an emergency work coordinator.

The number of revelers swelled this year because the traditional start day, July 7, fell on a weekend. Last year, more than 200,000 tourists visited Pamplona, according to the city government. Numbers this year are likely to exceed that, said spokeswoman Edurne Elio. Watch the chase through Pamplona's streets »

"I stayed up all night drinking. Thank God for espresso," said Matthew Genovese, 25, from Washington, Connecticut, in Pamplona for the first time.

Last year an American, 31-year-old Ray Ducharme, was thrown by a young cow in an event at the bullring following the first run. He underwent a 90-minute operation to reattach two vertebrae.

"They don't know what they're doing; bulls can kill," said Ruben Munoz, 24, from Madrid, who has run with the bulls during each of the last five years. "I do it for the adrenaline and because I feel liberated."

The start of the run, normally at 8 a.m., was delayed by six minutes because police were still clearing the streets of debris and drunken crowds.

The bulls, which are kept in an enclosure just outside the town center, are run daily during the San Fermin Festival to Pamplona's central bullring.

Each of the nine days of San Fermin features bulls from a different breeder. This year the festival began with six bulls from Dolores Aguirre. The lightest weighed 1,212 pounds and the heaviest 1,356 pounds.

Injuries are common as the crowds strive to keep ahead of the bulls in narrow street

Since records began in 1924, 13 people have been killed. The last fatality, a 22-year-old American, was gored to death in 1995.

The San Fermin Festival dates back to the late 16th century but gained worldwide fame in Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises."

I always feel sorry for the animals in events like these!  The humans are doing what they want to do, and are understanding WHY their doing it.  The animals are scared, confused and don't have a clue what's going on!  It's like the Bull Fights.  The Picador's "gore" the bull and makes him bleed until he's weak.........then the Matador goes in for the big brave kill!  Sickening! The one I witnesses in Mexico as a young teenager, the Matador got gored and flung up in the air and slammed into the rail.  I was the only one in the crowed who stood up and cheered..................My parents were NOT HAPPY with me!

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up worn out screaming what a ride..

All the bulls used in the Pamplona bull run are later killed in the local bullring. So the humans have the last laugh as it were.

Very few bulls are actually killed outright in the ring, after the "final blow" to the back of the neck, most bulls are still alive when the "trophy" of their tail is cut off, they are properly put to death when they are taken out of the ring and have their throats cut. Not quite as "romantic" and "traditional" as the crowd seem to think eh ?

Spain's biggest bulls take on Pamplona runners
  • Story Highlights
  • Miuras, Spain's most dangerous bulls, run on Sunday
  • Two gored Sunday as bulls turn on runners
  • San Fermin Festival dates to 16th century
PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) -- Spain's largest fighting bulls lived up to their fearsome reputation, goring two and crushing at least seven people as thousands of daredevils sprinted down narrow streets Sunday in Pamplona's annual running of the bulls.

A Miura fighting bull catches up to a runner during the second day San Fermin bull run.

The second of eight bull runs in the weeklong San Fermin festival involved the black and reddish-colored Miura bulls, renowned as the largest fighting bulls in Spain.

As they charged down the 800-meter route, two of them fell and, appearing to lose their way, turned on the crowd of runners. Two people were gored.

Despite the animals' size, experts admire the Miura breed for their power and grace, which inspired legendary Italian car maker Ferruccio Lamborghini to name one of his most famous sports cars after the animals. Watch as powerful bulls tangle with runners »

The lightest of the animals, a Miura named Majito, weighed 650 kilograms (1,433 pounds). The heaviest, Huigerito, was 695 kilograms (1,532 pounds).

The cobblestone streets of the city's old quarter were jammed with hung over thrill-seekers from around the world, all after a taste of Spanish-style danger.

"People stumble and fall in front of you but you have to just keep running, jump, knock them out of the way. It brings back old football days," said John Mauger, 61, a retired homicide detective from Huntington Beach, California.

Among those injured Sunday was Francisco Itarte, a San Fermin bull herder and one of several men charged with trying to keep the runs as orderly as possible. He was gored, as was a 24-year-old runner from Valencia.

Another of the injured, Modou Mbengue from Senegal, underwent an operation on his left forearm. A 23-year-old French man and seven Spaniards -- one transported by ambulance with his head held in a neck brace -- were treated in Pamplona's hospitals, said Beatriz Perez of the local government.

Since records began in 1924, 13 people have been killed. The last fatality, a 22-year-old American, was gored to death in 1995.
