DRIVING IN SPAIN
Holiday makers here are often heard to say, “You wouldn’t catch me driving HERE”!
I admit, it does appear a little frenzied.  And the compliance to being in the right lane for the direction you need to turn at junctions  as there is in the UK, simply does not apply here.
You find that Spanish drivers simply lane hop into gaps to get to the front of the queue, and then turn whichever direction they require, regardless of what lane they are in.
Motos (scooters) appear from any direction, and will pull up along either side of you, in front of you, or attempt to get in your boot. DON’T PANIC. This is normal. You soon become accustomed to it.  And contrary to the opinion you may at first have of Spanish drivers, they are highly skilled at dodging and averting accidents.  After a few weeks, you will relax about your driving, and enjoy the roads.

When you see your first family scooter you may find yourself doing a touble-take.  Although it is not actually legal, it is quite usual to have Dad driving (Steering) with a child or a dog stood on the fron foot plates.  Mum behind him with several shopping bags in each hand wildly flailing in the wind, and another child or two hanging on for dear life behind her.

Dogs on scooters (and sat on the tanks of motorbikes with their front paws up on the handlebars) are not unusual either, but they are pretty much always accompanied by a human somewhere on the bike!

Scooters are also used as commercial vehicles.  (Do I mean simply sign-written as advertising matter?  No!)   They are often laden with huge lengths of timber, tools, sacks of cement.  Recently saw a plumber with a complete toilet system (bowl and cystern) wedged between his legs as he rode through town.

What you have to remember, is that during the holiday season when the traffic becomes unbearable in town, then a scotter is the best form of transport as it does not appear to have to follow normal road rules.  Ie pavemnts and pedestrian areas become veritable scotter motorways in bids to avoid the traffic or simply short cut across town.

It's all very amusing!

I recall that I was most impressed with the condition of the Spanish tollways when we drove through there in 1981; they were well-built, well-maintained, and even had free shower facilities in the cleanest buildings we ever found on our many camping trips throughout Europe. The other roads, however....well, that's a different story.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Confession!   Haven't done this in a coon's age, but pulled out of a turning recently, and set off down the left hand side of the road.

Saw a car approaching me on the same side, and must confess I was thinking, "Come on Buddy, get on your own side"...

hhmmmmmm  ... it was me having a momentary lapse into UK driving habits! :littleangel:

Poor sod!  (I am glad I couldn't hear what he was saying as he passed me!) LOL
