WATER – “Don’t drink Water – Fish Sh*t in it”   No, seriously folks, if you ask any of the locals, even the hardy pensioners, they will tell you to buy bottled water to drink.

Boiling the tap water for hot drinks and cooking is acceptable, as is cleaning your teeth with it, if you live here.
But if you are only here on vacation, (unless you want to spend most of it in the bathroom!)  ....  stick to a glass-full of bottled water to clean your teeth, as it takes a while to customise yourself to the untreated variety.

(And don’t use the tap water to make your own ice-cubes) You can buy a huge bag of ice-cubes for less than a euro, at any of the kiosks around town, at the garages, and most shops.

Another thing to remember is, that even the bottled water is not treated (spring water), so leaving it in the light for a few days will start the bugs growing. So keep it refrigerated if you can, or don’t let it hang about.  We found this out by mis-fortune having left a bottle of water in the car for several days…Boy did it smell bad!

That's the case in many mediterranean countries, the water is often unsafe to drink. I also got told to watch out for what ice cubes are made of too!

I found this out in Barelona-my friend insisted on drinking it. She didn't see much of the rest of the trip!

We use it for brushing our teeth... but we never use it even for cooking or for cups of tea. Actually it's great if you are a little erm... bunged up ahem.

But no... it's nasty. The water here is really sandy. If I were to pour a glass of water and leave to settle for an hour... there wuld be 3 or 4 mm's of silt in the bottom.

Also not nice to pour a brown bath! Yuck!

But that's just Lanzarote. i hear that mainland Spain is much better.

Elle xx

Scooters are also used as commercial vehicles.  (Do I mean simply sign-written as advertising matter?  No!)   They are often laden with huge lengths of timber, tools, sacks of cement.  Recently saw a plumber with a complete toilet system (bowl and cystern) wedged between his legs as he rode through town.

Aha.  Maybe the chap on the scooter had sampled the water!
