QUEUES
If you are a person who is easily offended, I recommend that you DON’T join any queues!
The Spaniards have amazingly good systems regarding queues

Forget whatever queue customs you may have been brought up with and listen carefully, unless you fancy a visit to the local Guardia Civil Station….

You know how when you are in a supermarket in the UK (perhaps elsewhere, but I only know the UK), and someone has the absolute audacity to leave their trolley once they have a place in the checkout queue, to dash off and continue picking up items from the shelves.  Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.  It's the same 'hair on the back of your neck standing on end antagonism' that you feel when you count the items in the baskets of the folk queueing in the 10 items or less fast lane (and I know you count them- we all do!), and you count 11!!
You're British, so you don't actually SAY anything, but if looks could kill... the  remiss trolley-user or illegal basket-bearer would be a little molten heap on the soles of the next person's feet.  Right, got that sorted. We are being honest now, right?
Well, GET USED TO IT, and for goodness sake, stop being frustrated by it, because it is not frowned upon here in Spain.

For not only will you be stood in a queue and be passed by several minimal shoppers with only a single item... who actually entered the shop well after you were actually in the queue, only to watch them leave after not only by-passing you, but stopping to natter to the checkout cashier for 5 minutes into the bargain after the 'dirty deed' has been done.

It is perfectly normal to arrive at the queue, and find a host of unattended baskets and trolleys.  Don't be tempted to kick past them. That's NOT ok!

You can be pretty much assured that the shoppers in charge of the said baskets and trolleys will be back with the other half of their shopping just as their turn at the till comes round - their place held by the trolley or basket meanwhile.

Rather than be frustrated about this strange custom, embrace it, and do the same.  It makes for a much less frustrating shopping experience, and God knows shopping is bad enough as it is.
You actually get out in half the time, as what you do, is...you cover the FAR end of the supermarket first, then go and place your marker.  THEN, you do the rest of your shopping, carefully watching the queue, as there is one downside.  If you miss your turn, you're out! (Back of the queue).

Even more interestingly are the queueing systems in the banks and offices.

When you enter a room full of people who could be mistaken for loiterers (for that is how they appear, not an orderly queue, just a room full of chatting groups), you must say good day (for whatever relevant time it is), then ask 'Ultima'? (This shortenening version of 'who is last'?  will result in someone indicating that they are. This person is the person in front of you in the queue.
However, often you will be told that the last person is out of the room, but someone will tell you who it is when they return.
Alternatively, you may find someone will point to an unattended basket of shopping, or a bag. This is a marker (remember the supermarket 'markers?) and the owner of the basket etc is the last person before you!.

Now if there appear to be quite a few people and the numbers not going down very quickly, then this is your moment to indicate that you will be back, (best to leave a marker, but not really necessary), and bugger off to get something else sorted nearby, ie post a letter or call into another shop.

It really works!  And once you learn to stop being aggravated by the strange system, you will learn to love it!

And I'll tell what else is cool about this place....

If you only  have a few jobbies in your shopping basket, folk will usher you past them in the queue!   (Never had THAT happen in Tesco (UK)  !!)

They bloody don't usher you through in Hiperdino here!

But we do get a smile out of the cashiers now - which is better than 6 months ago lol.
