The first Tuesday in November - and every true blue Aussie is digging out their morning suit, pearls, top hat, Paris chapeau, designer frock, binocs er etc, and packing the Bolly and caviar!!!!

It's Melbourne Cup Day.

The biggest horse race in the world. And the most glamourous. Who needs the Kentucky Derby? Who needs Ascot?  Even Sydney folks turn (for the one and only time in the year) south, and gaze enviously towards Melbourne ...

This is our great cultural festival, our elegant tradition of high living and jet setting .. er and feasting and heck punting on a bunch of bloody nags .. even for those of us who can't on any other day tell the bitey end of a hossie from the business end..

I am breathless.... with anticipation.    I have a horse called Purple Moon.  Picked from a work sweep.  The notes in this morning's newspaper say Purple Moon is an English stayer.... I prefer to think of ?him as a stylishly gay mount flashing his posterior at the rest of the field as he sashays home.

Hic.. yeah.. the champers got opened early. giggle..

Nice one!!!!  I had a lovely day and my horse actually WON!!!!!!!   I'm no gambler but .. once a year... grin.  I put a few dollars on Efficient and that came in first.  And then dear old Purple Moon came in second.

I know, it's a pain, LC... I was hoping it would be at least a couple of million dollars.  But Big Louie told me to dry my eyes, SugarCheeks, and gave me some more diamonds and another yacht. He doesn't like to see me sad or to worry my cute little head with boring things like money. He said he'd buy me all those horses and some more friends too and didn't mind if one of them was a cop, he's clean now..

Yeah, that yacht is just like the smaller one of mine!!! Croc Dundee's a bit long in the tooth these days and Hollywood seems to have turned him into a plastic Ken Doll - I'll bring a few young, hunky, bronzed Aussie lifeguards.. pant pant pant... Don't breathe a word of this to Big Louie.. He trusts me of course, but he does sometimes have a nasty habit of concreting my toyboys into the foundations of his completely legit business building foundations.
