Today I saw Jack Hanna's animal TV program. It had a segment on SNAKES (I HATE SNAKES!) saying Australia's Brushland has the most poisionous SNAKES in the world! (I HATE SNAKES!) Anyway, question for the Aussies, do you take any special precautions to safeguard against SNAKE bites?! Do they ever make it into the cities? (Oh yeah, did I mention I HATE SNAKES?!)

Sorry, Cars - I only just saw this. And yes on the deadly snakes. Here's some info from my old university. http://www.usyd.edu.au/anaes/venom/snakebite.html "In Australia there are about 3,000 snake bites per year, of which 200 to 500 receive antivenom; on average one or two will prove fatal. About half the deaths are due to bites from the brown snake; the rest mostly from tiger snake, taipan and death adder." Where I live we have red bellied black snakes and eastern brown snakes. I run cross country and do lots of bush walking. In all that time, I've seen two live snakes, basking on rocks. One of each kind. Mostly they hear you coming and get out of your way. I saw a yellow bellied sea snake washed up just alive on a Sydney beach last year too. Beautiful but deadly. As for precautions - I'd say that I am not comfortable out there in the bush in summer without proper shoes and long pants. If I have to traverse areas with high grass I sing loudly to leave any critters in no uncertainly that I'm there. So far they've taken the hint. I'm a trained first aid officer. We learn that you usually have time on your side when bitten. So don't panic, don't run. Immobilise the limb (hopefully it's a limb) use a compression bandage, splint, whatever - and call for assistance. Tell them what bit you. (I've never had to treat snakebite, or even spider bite. In the wetter coastal areas round Sydney, funnel web spiders are more of a worry than snakes). Australia's population - 21 million Snakes bite fatalities per year - 1-2 America's population - 300 million Snakes bite fatalities per year 9-15* (from rattlesnakes) * Approximately 8,000 people a year receive venomous snakebites in the U.S., 9-15 victims die. (FDA) http://www.desertusa.com/mag98/mar/stories/rattlesin.html More info with tables for world regions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakebite
