Looks like we have a change of Government.  It also looks like the Prime Minister has lost his own electoral seat.

Yes, I was just hearing that on the news. What changes do you expect to see with the new government?

I don't know, Construct, how much this will for instance affect our foreign policy and relationships with our allies. Probably not greatly. I expect there will be some changes to industrial legislation - there are a lot of ex trade unionists in the new government. The Greens also polled very well, so some emphasis on environmental matters. Also education. We'll see.

Pam,...I was very troubled to hear about this a few days ago.
I hope it will be good for your Country.
I was troubled because he will pull the Troops out of Iraq and you guys have always been in our Allies and go way back.We have a history of watching each others back and protecting each other.
I feel we have been cut loose and set adrift because of Political heat that he is afraid to take.
Can you advise me as to how you all feel over there or give me a link of some sort that will help me understand what the masses are thinking and feeling?
I am not looking for a confrontation,...just understanding and I will start a different post if this gets too involved.

Blacksheep, the best I can do is to give you the Australian Labour Party policy statement on defence.

http://www.alp.org.au/media/1107/dsidefloo120.php

The incoming Prime Minister stated

"Out Defence policy is based on three pillars: our alliance with the United States, our membership in the United Nations, and of course our policy of comprehensive engagement in East Asia and in the wider Asia Pacific region. These are the three pillars which underpin our approach to national security policy.

Labor is fundamentally committed to the future of the US-Australia alliance. This alliance was formed during World War II under the prime ministership of John Curtin and has been sustained under multiple prime ministers both Labor and conservative since then. Therefore a future Labor Government of Australia, if we’re elected, that alliance remains core business for us as well. It is a core part of our approach to national security policy. "

What this means for our troops in Iraq, I am not yet sure.

On troop withdrawal

From Wikipedia

"
Foreign policy Kevin Rudd (left) and US President George W. Bush (right) meet at APEC Australia 2007 in Sydney As shadow foreign minister, Rudd reformulated Labor's foreign policy in terms of "Three Pillars": engagement with the UN, engagement with Asia, and the US alliance.[29]
Rudd supports the continued deployment of Australian troops in Iraq, but not the continued deployment of combat troops. Rudd, in his role as shadow foreign minister had written a letter in November 2003 to Prime Minister John Howard offering policy ideas after the fall of Baghdad. Among his recommendations were a deployment of trainers for the New Iraqi army, and using the Australian Electoral Commission to help Iraq stage elections.[30] However, Labor pledged in 2007 to replace 550 existing combat troops with new troops serving training and border security roles (possibly stationed in other countries around the Middle East), with a continued presence of over 1,000 Australian troops stationed in Iraq (in 2007, there were 1,575 Australian military personnel operating within Iraq). [31] Rudd is also in favour of Australia's military presence in Afghanistan.[32]
Rudd is a supporter of the road map for peace and defended Israel's right to self-defence during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, condemning Hezbollah and Hamas for "violating" Israeli territory.[33]"
