I'm going to try this out.  You see lots of Europeans striding out with two stick that look like ski poles - all fit and jolly and possibly yodelling.  Recently I've notice aussies similarly flashing by, and decided it looked like fun.  Anyway.. I'll report back.

Seems as if it is on the order of cross country skiing..without the skis.  And the snow.

That's a very good comment, Marie. It is similar, redistributes weight, is easier on injured joints, good for core strength.

I had today off and went for a swim at Manly Beach. Met up with a bunch of visiting Canadians - as one does - and a couple of them, from Quebec, had walking poles (when they got out of the sea!!) and gave me some pointers. Very interesting. When I'd tried them out myself earlier in the day on the narrow steep tracks round where I live in Sydney, I found them great, even though I wasn't doing it right. Grin.

You see this very often here in Norway where I live. I can not remember the details but supposedly the extra use of your arms with the poles if a big benefit to the uper body part of a "walking" exercise.

Many here swear by the routine

Looks to me like skiing for the uncoordinated.  Certainly a hell of a lot safer, I imagine. :)
