I live near where all this has been taking place. It's not only caused animal protectionists world wide to scream loudly, but locals have written to newspapers, picketed the perpetrators and tied themselves to the barricades. Kangaroo species are of course native to Australia and arent' found in the wild anywhere else. In this driest of continents they compete with other wildlife and introduced farm animals for limited resources. They eat crops. They are NOT an endangered species. In fact in many areas they are in plague proportions. On the hill behind my house there are literally hundreds of kangaroos. In the evening and early morning they hop down streets in search of garden water. They gather on school playing fields. You may collect one on your windscreen. Something like the deer population in parts of the US. Farmers shoot them regularly, but we don't have defined hunting seasons like other countries do. Increasingly you now see kangaroo meat here on the supermarket shelves. It's good and lean and an alternative to beef. My only real problem with the present cull is the time it has taken. The herded animals have understandably suffered some stress. And the meat will apparently not be used. An inexcusable waste. There will be a few less kangaroos in a small area of the national capital of Australia. Skippy will however survive.
