SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian rescuers were on Friday trying to solve the "Mary Celeste" style mystery of a yacht found floating off the coast with its engine running, food on its table ready to eat, but no crew.

The 12-metre (36 feet) catamaran was found 80 nautical miles off Townsville on the northeast coast, but there was no sign of the three crewmen who had set sail from Queensland state bound for Australia's west coast Sunday.
"What they found was a bit strange in that everything was normal, there was just no sign of the crew," Jon Hall from emergency management in Queensland told local radio Friday.

Hall said the yacht's sails were up but one was badly shredded. He said the engine was running, there was food on the table, a laptop was turned on, and the radio and global positioning satellite (GPS) were working.

Three life jackets and survival equipment, including an emergency beacon, were found on board, but no life rafts.

The Mary Celeste was an abandoned "ghost ship" found off the coast of Portugal in 1872. None of the Mary Celeste's crew or passengers were ever found.

The KAZ 11 was spotted adrift on the outer Great Barrier Reef Wednesday. Rescue crews boarded the vessel Friday but there was no sign of the three crew men, aged 56, 63 and 69.

Police said weather conditions at sea Sunday and Monday were rough. "There was a fair sort of a wind out there but it's improved since then, so who knows what could've happened," said Police Chief Superintendent Roy Wall,.

Rescuers have retrieved the boat's GPS system to analyze data for clues to the mysterious disappearance of the crew.

"That will now enable us to track backwards where this yacht has actually been in the last few days, and we're hoping that can pinpoint the search area for the missing crew," said Hall.

I love this kind of stuff.  It's one of those mysteries that doesn't seem to have any solution to the answer.  Why is it that a whole crew can suddenly disappear and yet everything on the ship seems normal.  What is probably the most unusual aspect here is that the sail is ripped and if I was investigating this, I would certainly have the sail investigated which may be a start.  I hope that these mysterious disappearances can soon be resolved, and it's almost as if it happened in the Bermuda Triangle which itself is a very weird area that even I wouldn't attempt to go. ::shock::

'Ghost yacht' crew search halted

All the vessel's sails were up, although one was badly torn

Australian authorities have ended their search for the crew of a yacht found off Australia's Great Barrier Reef, saying their fate remains a mystery.
The Kaz II was found with its engine running and a table laid for dinner.
Rescuers said that the craft had probably been drifting since last Sunday, making it unlikely that any of the three crew could have survived.
One theory is that members of the three-man crew fell overboard in bad weather conditions.
Queensland police said that the decision to call off the hunt was "based on expert medical advice which suggests the men could not have survived this long in the water".
Mysterious disappearance
The boat left Airlie Beach on Sunday bound for Townsville on the first leg of a voyage around northern Australia.
The 12m (40 foot) catamaran was spotted by a helicopter on Wednesday drifting off the Great Barrier Reef, but a rescue team only reached the boat on Friday, and confirmed that there was no-one aboard.

Rescue crews say they are puzzled by the mysterious disappearance.
"The engine was running, the computers were running, there was a laptop set up on the table which was running, the radio was working... and there was food and utensils set on the table ready to eat," said Jon Hall, a spokesman for Queensland's Emergency Management office.
"It was a bit strange," he added.
All the vessel's sails were up, although one was badly shredded, and lifejackets were still on board.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the men had been planning to sail around northern Australia to Western Australia.
The KAZ II is now back in port.
Police forensic teams say they do not suspect foul play.
