Championing Children

Both inspiring stories.

I don't know if I would class them as "heroes" though, I don't want to upset anybody but to me a hero is someone "who runs towards a situation everyone else is running away from".

That to me defines a true hero.

I understand that perspective.  ::thumbs::

But aren't there everyday heroes too?  What the people did in those examples is no small feat...but even the parent that cancels an important meeting to go to their childs recital is a hero to their child.

I think the point is that each and every one of us can and does make a difference in the world, from the small things to the very large, and everywhere in between.

And I think if we start focusing on those little things too, sooner or later, we'll be amazed at how many heroic things often go by unnoticed.

So please everyone feel free to post examples of heroes that you notice or find or witness or know.  ::rose::

I would much rather see the people mentioned above considered true heros.  They are better role models than considering a sports figure, or celebrity a hero just because they have a talent for their job and make alot of money.

I've heard this story before, it's absolutely awesome! Sometimes all a kid needs is someone to believe in them.

Medical Marvel
Rather than go into private practice, Dr. Randy Christensen dedicated himself to saving the lives of homeless children on the street. As medical director for the Crews’n Healthmobile, he gives free medical attention to street kids with no health insurance. Each year, his program reaches more than 2,000 people in Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona.

Defending the Planet
In 1999 at age 25, Ken Noguchi climbed to the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the youngest person to scale the tallest peaks on all seven continents. On Everest, he noticed piles of trash left by fellow climbers, much of it bearing Japanese labels. Since then, his "litter brigades" have cleared eight tons of waste from Everest; now they're working on cleaning up Japan's Mount Fuji.

Young Wonder
According to UNICEF, one of every six people on Earth lacks access to safe drinking water. Sixteen-year-old Ryan Hreljac, who lives near Ottawa, Ontario, is working to change that. To date, the Ryan’s Well Foundation has built 266 wells in 12 developing countries, bringing clean water to more than 435,000 people.
