::whello:: Hiya!  The Malaysian government is banning fast food companies from advertising on children's television.  Malaysia wishes to support nutritious eating among it's children and young people, and they feel eliminating fast food ads will help end childhood obesity.  What say you?

Fast food ads banned on Malaysian children's TV

SHAH ALAM of the Brunei Times
25-Jun-07

MALAYSIA'S Cabinet has decided to ban fast food commercials on children's television programmes, said the Malaysian Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

He said fast food companies would also be banned from sponsoring such programmes.
"The decision was made because the Cabinet feels it is its responsibility to see that children below 12 years of age are instilled with good eating habits," he added after launching the national-level World Health Day 2007 celebration here today.

"Besides that, Malaysia has also ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which stipulates that children have the right to nutritious food."

Asked when the decision would be enforced, Dr Chua said his officers would first discuss the matter with the Information and Energy, Water and Communications ministries as some of the fast food companies might have already signed contracts with the television stations.

He said the ban was not a biased decision as many of the fast food companies were multinationals, while the government was focusing only on those companies that aggressively promoted fast food via the electronic media.

Personally, I can't stand how much JUNK is marketed to kids. I wish media outlets banned all that junk, if they could do so legally since they are private.

They should just ban children TV...its not for kids, its for their conditioning towards their slavery!

I think it's a fantastic idea! I'd also like to see violence banned from children's TV. Of course that would mean that children's TV would have to be totally revamped but I think it would be worth it!

Amen to that, Mama!  I've been saying for years that ultra-violence is bad for children.  (Heck, I think it's bad for adults too!)

And anyone out there that thinks the ratings systems works should ask a 10-year-old if he's ever seen an R-rated movie.  They'll laugh.  I saw a 6-year-old renting "Hostel" the other day.  he told me his aunt will let him watch anythng he wants.

Most of them have even seen internet porn!

It's the loss of innocence in America..and that's a bad thing, maybe the worst of things.
