Actually I'll disagree with the majority here.  I don't have one permanently in my car, but I do have one that I take with us for trips more than several hours in one direction.  I do enjoy paying attention to my kids, playing games, singing, talking, etc.  The problem is if traffic gets congested, the weather gets nasty, the kids start to lose their attention span, etc.  I want to be able to give them something to do so that I can pay attention to the road.  It has worked several times.

Last year on the way to Florida I was all tied up with truck convoys in front of and behind me, while headed through the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee during rain so heavy I couldn't see more than about 20 feet in front of the car.  It was very nice to be able to put the TV on for the kids (it has headphones), turn the radio off, and concentrate my full attention on driving.

Heh, Q!

You present a very moderate and considered view.  On the one hand, you applaud the use of games, singing, talking, Etc., to keep kids occupied; on the other hand, you have found the in-car DVD player useful on difficult trips.

Moderation is very important.  I truly see your point of view.  To be honest, I've never even *owned* a vehicle with a DVD player, ha-ha, thus I don't know how helpful having one can be.  You explained it well, and I believe you.

Thanks for sharing your experience.   ::thumbs::
