Anyone here have a 7th grader?

My daughter brought home the dumbest art assignment last week: she was supposed to draw pencil lines on the paper in a specific pattern, then do a watercolor painting over them. It was copy paper, not watercolor paper, and the assignment was graded on the accuracy of the lines, not the painting.

What kind of art should they be doing in 7th grade?

That does sound like cross-curriculum Math connection.  I'll tell you flat out as a teacher for 15 years:  Be glad your child has art at all.

Many school have completely gotten rid of any kind of elective classes.  Band, P.E., art, music, you name it.  If it doesn't have anything to do with the core classes like Math and English, then it isn't tested on the NCLB test and it doesn't matter (or so the thinking is these days.)

Never mind that it may make your child a more well-rounded human being.  Never mind that all humans need a creative outlet. Forget the close connection between math and music, or between song lyrics and poetry.

The school is being judged by one thing only: How well it does on the test.

 Everything else be damned.

(PS...  No teacher I know is happy with this sad state of affairs. I hope you are not either.)

Saint,

That's why I am glad that I have my grandson enrolled in a magnet school here in Chattanooga, TN. They have a great program. The school he is in, is a Museum Magnet School. They take field trips and learning expeditions to places like the Hunter Art Museum, the Tennessee Aquarium, the Nature Center,  the African/American Museum, and several other places including the Theater.

They also teach art, and have art projects. One really neat thing about the school, and the other magnet schools, is the fact that the parents have to volunteer a minimum of 18 hours per year for their child to attend. This gets the parents involved in every phase of the school. I go on nearly all the learning expeditions and field trips, and I earn my hours while enjoying the places we go.

It's a religious-based private school so there are no specialists, the same teacher teaches all the subjects including art, music and PE. So in 6th grade they have great PE but awful music, in 7th grade they have good music but awful art, etc. The frustrating thing for me as a parent (and former music teacher) is that the upper grade teachers DO have talents in separate areas so if the 6th grade teacher would do PE, the 7th grade teacher would do music, etc,  for all the upper grades it would benefit the kids SO much!
