My daughter is a Junior. She's smart and studies, but she's flunking algebra. She doesn't like it much and is scared of the teacher - a big loud guy who coaches wrestling.

Their assignments aren't graded, he just asks if the kids have questions. She thinks she understands it so she doesn't asks questions. There's one quiz and one test per chapter. He doesn't offer extra credit, and can't tutor her after school because of coaching. (She doesn't have a study hall this semester)

I think he's a terrible teacher - who would allow a smart student to flunk their class? His comments on her academic report were "She needs to correctly remember and apply the details of each concept, eliminate needless errors and ask questions." I honestly wouldn't care if she gets a bad grade because it's as much his fault as hers, EXCEPT she's looking at college and a bad grade will affect those plans.

Does anyone have any advice?

There are online tutoring services for a fee.  But some offer a free trial...

for example:

http://www.homeworkhelp.com/

http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/departments/homework/

This one looks like it might be free...but there's a charge if you want to purchase their software.  But looks pretty thorough online.  Might be worth looking into.

Does the school have any leaning centers where your daughter can go for extra help?

Thanks for the links, I didn't even think of online tutoring! Her dad is helping too, he knows math/algebra so that should help.

There's no learning center at the school. I'm thinking maybe we need a parent/teacher conference. I hate confrontation but this just isn't OK.

I had the same issues when I was in school (about 150 years ago).  I was never good at math, and algebra was way over my head.  But this sounds like it is more the teacher's problem than your daughter.  Maybe a talk with the guidance counselor?  Or an opportunity to take it in summer school, with a different teacher?  I think a different teacher would make all the difference.

Do they have peer tutoring in your school...where she can get together with a classmate for help?

Nope, no peer tutoring, that I know of anyway. Without a study hall it would be hard anyway. :(

PM me.  I teach that subject too.

Unlike her teacher, I am available to students Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. His comments are meaningless teacherese.

If you can tell me the lesson of the day and possibly type in some of the problems, I may be able to provide instruction and easy pneumonic devices to help her remember the algorithms.

Thanks much! She won't be home until after 9 tonight but I'll talk to her. My husband and I are both teachers and recognize meaningless teacherese when we see it. ;)

I'm generally VERY supportive of my kids' teachers... until they show that they don't deserve it.

ROFL!  Then you probably recognize the "Teacher / Coach Syndrome!"

:haha:Or as I like to call it, "We need the good 'ol boy so give him a token class" Syndrome!

Definitely! And I can't blame her for being scared of him - I am too. LOL!
