My son's 3rd grade teacher does something I think is really cool: Word of the Week. The "assignment" is to look up the word and be able to tell what it means, and to bring in something to illustrate the word. Family participation is encouraged which is really fun. Last week's word was "crustacean" so he brought in "A House for Hermit Crab" by Eric Carle. One week it was "labrynth" (apparently I can't spell today) so he and his dad made a maze with graham crackers, frosting and a marble.
