My husband's school district is hosting 5 students and 1 teacher from Thailand - they arrived on the 12th and will be leaving next Wed. Our family has the teacher staying with us, and it's been SO interesting to discover what's the same/different in culture and education between the two countries!

For instance, in Thailand teachers are "officers" of the government, have dress uniforms similar to our military dress uniforms, and have official IDs in addition to their regular IDs.

They probably get the respect of an official too. (sigh)

I wish things were still that way in America.

What an incredible 2 1/2 weeks! Our guest went by the English nickname "Jim" and was very fluent in English, with an incredible vocabulary. He knew " menthol-lyptus" for heavens' sake, but didn't know "silly".

We learned SO much from Jim! For instance, Thai culture isn't as similar to Asian culture as I'd thought. In Thailand to "Hang out" means to go out drinking - imagine Jim's surprise during a tour of my daughter's high school, when I explained that the commons was where the students would "hang out". :lmao: Thai students wear a uniform all the way through High School, and female teachers aren't allowed to wear pants unless they teach preschool or kindegarten.

It was amazing to discover how much Americans and Thai have in common, and personally how much Jim had in common with us. It was also interesting to see where our cultures were different.

At the end of the time we all wished he could have stayed longer.

What a great report back, thanks! How interesting. That is an experience I would like to have but probably never will. I will have to live it vicariously through you. :)

Hey, start a cool new topic.

It was a fantastic time. I'm actually thinking of going to Thailand to teach for a year now - he said English teachers don't need teaching licenses. (I have the degree, but let my license expire)  That's something I never would have considered before because I'd be afraid the culture would be too different. Now I'm just afraid of the long flight over the ocean. ;)
