I hope I don't open a political can of worms here... does anyone have year-round school? How does it work? Do you like it?

We have a traditional school year and I always look forward to the summers with my kids. I think I'd miss that if we had school year-round.

I personally don't think constant year round schooling is a very good idea.

I am all for children getting a good education but they need time away from school to enjoy being a kid with their friends away from a school environment.

There was recently a 5 part documentary called "chinese school" on a BBC digital channel. The students work very hard, 7 am - till as late as 8 or 9 at night, six days a week, many of them living at the school. You could see the physical and mental strain building over the weeks from the constant studying.

I, as a professional educator, disagree.

I totally understand the old "let them be a kid" argument. Personally, I very much enjoyed my summers off too.

But this is not the 1970s, when America was riding high on a standard of living above the rest of the planet.

We are at economic war with China and India. Our current children may be the first generation to actually have a lower standard of living than their parents since this country began.

In order for us to remain a superpower, we have to be competitive.

Sacrifices must be made if we are to succeed and I'm afraid this is one of them.

If you could see the retention rates that I see, you'd understand much better.

Summer vacation hurts us in two ways:

First retention of learned information, the old "If you don't use it, you lose it" rule is seriously in effect. Kids lose massive amounts of information during the three months they are off.

Secondly, when they come back we have to spend at least nine weeks reviewing that lost information from the last year in order to begin teaching new concepts. We just lost even more time to the Chinese and Indians.

It's the 21st century. Lots of things are changing and truthfully, that's much harder on us older people than it is on the young. They get used to changes very quickly.

The current research suggest that a "three week on - one week off" method is the most effective. That results in a 9-day "Spring break-like" period of time off each month.

For most kids, that's plenty of time to "be a kid." (They usually all complain that they were bored all summer anyway.)

In addition, it makes it much easier for families to plan travel and vacations without losing any school days.

True.

I always found the six weeks off at the end of term a bit tedious after about 3 weeks.

I think that monday to friday for 3 weeks and then a week off is a fair compromise.

I tend to like the idea of a full school year. Maybe less hrs per day and more 3 day weekends but they do lose a little during the summer.

I think the 3 week thing is a good idea, for the most part.

But at this moment I'm glad there's a whole summer break... my daughter was "assulted" at school yesterday - another girl scratched the heck out of my daughter's wrist. This same girl has been bullying my daughter all year (told her she needed a push-up bra - in 7th grade for heaven's sake!) and I'm glad they'll have almost 3 mos apart to grow up a bit. Hopefully things will be better next year after this break

Mama - Have you reported this to the administration? These days we take bullying VERY seriously. (Post Columbine era.)

I'd request a sit-down with the parents of the other student, and you might either want to bring a lawyer, or hint that you are consulting one because assault at school can be prosecuted and sued for much more easily these days.

Also, if the administration takes no action, they can be sued.

it seems that every year more in-service days are inserted into the school year and as a result summer vacation gets shorter and shorter...i suspect they are moving in that direction and one day will  innocently say 'how did that happen?!' :dunno:::sly:: ::chuckle::

it's a conspiracy!  ::rotfl:::lmao:::spy::

Here's another idea that is gaining favor: starting the school day at 10:00 am instead of 8:00 am because the young body does not get going until later inthe day.

Some are also suggesting 8 hour school days and only four school days a week.

My hubby called the principal - also my daughter's teacher - last night and we'll follow up tonight. It's a private/religious school so things don't work quite the same as in the public sector. But we'll go to the school board next if necessary.

Year-round school isn't a bad idea, but I don't know if lower grades can handle 8 hour days.

Year-round school would also alleviate booking problems for hotels and camp sites during the summer.

Oh...my mistake...that was only for high school students. Elementary and middle school would stay the same.
