Americans can answer for Americans, Canadians for Canadians, etc.

Here's my list:

1. The Star Spangled Banner

2. God Bless America

3. Yankee Doodle (the original version)

4. Home on the Range

5. Camptown Races

6. This Land is Your Land

I'll think of more later.

The impetus for my question was E.D. Hirsch's book, Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know. In order to live and thrive in one's society, one must learn common cultural references.

Personally, I don't know how you can call yourself an American without knowing "Hotel California"!

I love Hotel California!  ::sgrin::  I think all children should be taught their National Anthem at least!  "Waiting for the world to change" by John Mayer wouldn't hurt either.........  I'll think of more later too.

I don't know if I'd put it on a national curriculum, but I think Californian kids should at least learn "Clementine".

In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner forty niner,
And his daughter Clementine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Herring boxes, without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Drove she ducklings to the water
Ev'ry morning just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer
So I lost my Clementine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

How I missed her! How I missed her,
How I missed my Clementine,
But I kissed her little sister,
I forgot my Clementine.

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
Thou art lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

I guess Floridians should learn "The Old Folks at Home" since it's their state song.

Is there a song that encapsulates "Britishness" ?

I'm really not sure.

I suppose Elgars "Jerusalem" could encapsulate "Englishness" to many people.

I would go for songs that teach kids lessons about real life as opposed to blind patriotism though.

Anything accept God save the bloody queen would be ok to me, a horrible ditty that makes no mention of the country or its citizens.

The songs don't necessarily need to be patriotic. How about "Spanish Ladies" or "Orange and Lemons"? My daughter learned the latter song from a CD of children's music, but she doesn't know where the churches are or what a farthing is. I'll forgive her because she's American.

Oranges and lemons
Say the bells of St Clements
You owe me five farthings
Say the bells of St Martins
When will you pay me?
Say the bells of Old Bailey
When I grow rich
Say the bells of Shoreditch
When will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney
I'm sure I don't know
Says the great bell at Bow

When I sing to put my youngest daughter to sleep, I sing her "Aka Tonboh" (Red Dragonfly) because it's a song most Japanese kids know. If she ever goes there at least she'll know what the other kids know in that matter. Songs for certain festivals are also important because they are sung in kindergarten and primary school.
