re:

The excessive regard of parents for their children, and their dislike of other people's is, like class feeling, patriotism, save-your-soul-ism, and other virtues, a mean exclusiveness at bottom.

I agree.  The unspoken message is, "You are better than other people, more deserving than other people, and you must not have regard for others unlike you for you are beneath such considerations."  I never considered "excessive regard of parents for their children" quite this way before.  The quote is quite excellent.

There is a little boy in our apartment complex raised with just such an attitude.  His mother has taught him to regard himself as superior to all other people by virtue of his being of a particular American Indian tribe and simply by being her son.  He has turned into a sociopath with absolutely no regard for other people.

I think the key phrase from the quote is "and their dislike of other people's children" as it is this behavior that defines the subsequent elitist behavior of their children.  To dislike the behavior of another man's child is much different than disliking the person of that child.  Disliking the person entirely says, "You are inherently flawed."

As to how this attitude contributes to "class feeling, patriotism, save-your-soul-ism" and such, it sends the message to "favored" children that they are superior.  Not by virtue of accomplishment or hard work, but simply by the class, nation, or religion to which they belong do these children defend their superiority.  That entirely defeats any and all attempts to establish love or (at the least) tolerance between peoples of differing classes, nations, or religions.  Without love or basic tolerance, there can be no cooperation; and without cooperation, there can be no unity.

Hmmm.  So, yeah, "excessive regard" is a destructive thing.

I figured you'd get a kick out of that one, Britt! Sometimes people do as that American Indian neighbor did out of defense ... a defensive reaction to having been stepped on, etc. whether as a race or class or some other thing, I don't know.
