::whello::  Hello!  This is an issue that infuriates me so please excuse my bias!  Please feel free to disagree or agree with the opinions expressed in these sources.  For me personally, I think it is criminal to dress young girls and teenage girls in provocative, sexy fashions.  It teaches girls and young women to value only appearance and to see themselves as primarily objects of sexual gratification.

I have worked with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and I know the literature.  Please trust me when I say: Dressing girls in skimpy, provocative, slinky outfits with high-heeled shoes and open midriffs is a grooming behavior that prepares children to be exploited sexually.  Moderation in dress protects children and promotes a healthier society.  Children must value character before appearance.

What do you think?

Goodbye to Girlhood
As Pop Culture Targets Ever Younger Girls, Psychologists Worry About a Premature Focus on Sex and Appearance

By Stacy Weiner

Ten-year-old girls can slide their low-cut jeans over "eye-candy" panties. French maid costumes, garter belt included, are available in preteen sizes. Barbie now comes in a "bling-bling" style, replete with halter top and go-go boots. And it's not unusual for girls under 12 to sing, "Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?"

American girls, say experts, are increasingly being fed a cultural catnip of products and images that promote looking and acting sexy.

"Throughout U.S. culture, and particularly in mainstream media, women and girls are depicted in a sexualizing manner," declares the American Psychological Association's Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls, in a report issued Monday. The report authors, who reviewed dozens of studies, say such images are found in virtually every medium, from TV shows to magazines and from music videos to the Internet.

While little research to date has documented the effect of sexualized images specifically on young girls, the APA authors argue it is reasonable to infer harm similar to that shown for those 18 and older; for them, sexualization has been linked to "three of the most common mental health problems of girls and women: eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression."

Report of the APA Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls (PDF)

The proliferation of sexualized images of girls and young women in advertising, merchandising, and media is harming girls' self-image and healthy development. This report explores the cognitive and emotional consequences, consequences for mental and physical health, and impact on development of a healthy sexual self-image.

What Parents Can Do

Parents can teach girls to value themselves for who they are, rather than how they look. Parents can teach boys to value girls as friends, sisters, and girlfriends, rather than as sexual objects. Here are some conversation starters for parents, as well as other adults and caregivers.

We have two daughters. My wife and I have convinced them that to show skin on thier bellies by short shirts will only attract boys and at thier ages that's not where it at!

They were brought up very early by us that thier is more to life then boyfriend and girlfriend and promoted by young television and advertizments. The "sexual freedom" fans like Hollywood and Planned Parenthood have aided in the destruction of young women in america today and the lose of there value outside of sexuality.

I am always happy when I learn someone is raising their girls (and boys) to respect their bodies and value chastity.  Modesty is an important value.

Personally, I also agree that children need not worry about boyfriend-and-girlfriend relationships in childhood.  It is an unnecessary distraction.

Childhood is a time of innocence, not of becoming miniature adults.

Good for you!  :D

You and I have had a pretty good batting average lately.::thumbs::

Teen girls and younger have been turned into sex objects for money, greed and lust.

It is motivated by the enemy who is behind the scenes...

Yes, I agree that money, greed and lust are behind this trend.  Big business makes a great deal of profit off the exploitation of children.  This trend has evolved so gradually that many people are unaware of how harmful it is.  Many have become desensitized to seeing children dress as provocative little adults.  I have heard many parents say, "Well, that's just the style nowadays," as if they have no control over what their children wear.  It took some doing, but I always found attractive-but-modest clothing for my daughter.  She just looked like a normal kid, not a miniature Barbie doll.

Personally, I believe one must live life according to a set of Divine laws.  Without Divine law, chaos results.  If one accepts that God has revealed laws to govern human conduct and protect human society, it makes sense that ignoring these laws leads to disintegration and chaos.  Whatever spiritual path we follow, most people of faith know that the innocence of children must be upheld and respected.

When my daughter turns 18 she can do/wear/go wherever she likes, I would like to think that I will have brought her up to be sensible enough to be able to enjoy life without getting into trouble.

Until then I want her to enjoy being a child and viewing the world and experencing life as a child. When I see young girls running around in short skirts and cut off t-shirts with the word "sexy" or "porno" written on them I feel ill.

I am all for freedom, but the sexualisation of children (particularly girls) is wrong and turns my stomach.

I agree.

And you're right: Once they are adults, our children are free to make their own decisions, and the values we instilled in them as children will continue into adulthood.

I always feel happy when a father defends his daughter's right to innocence.

That rocks, Ninja.
