As usual, Britt and I agree completely.  America is a Union, and you can't have a union if the citizens can't talk each other!

Once when I was teaching seventh grade, a kid traferred in from Texas that was the worst racist I have ever seen in my life.  He called the Hispanic-American kids "Beaners" and "Spics", insulted every other nationality, and told our African American teacher to "swim back to Africa."

We had groups of kids coming into the office by the end of the day asking for permission to kill him.

So we called a P / T conference. Dad came in...with a swastika tatooed on his arm.  I guess we all know now why his child was a racst.

Racism is a learned trait.

when someone asks my ethnicity I tell them I'm a Heinz 57.

Well, many times, for many people - it's true. I'm Polish, German and Slovak - this last allegedly can be traced back to the Mongol Invasion. Supposedly there is some French in there as well as a little Russian mixed in the German blood from the Seven Year War, but that was never able to be confirmed. Relatives who are deep into genealogy keep us all informed :blah:

I don't really care. My view is that somewhere back on the trail we were all pretty much the same. When the Ice Age(s) occurred there were only so many places to live and those all happened to be around the Equator so my hypothesis is that we were all once people of color.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I agree with Saint, as well.

Saint, I dearly hope that young man learned greater respect.  God willing, he will choose a different path from his father.  I have known several people who were once racist but accepted responsibility to change.  It took them time to unlearn racist behaviors but they succeeded.  I find such stories quite inspirational.

One person I met was a former member of the Black Panthers.  He lived in Brooklyn in the early 1970's - young, Black and angry.  An elderly white Bahá'í couple lived next door to him.  To his endless annoyance, they constantly said Hello to him, invited him to tea, and asked him how his Black Panther work was going.

(Hahaha!)

For over a year, he rebuffed them with comments like, "Yeah, whatever, Cracker," but they persisted.  "They liked me so much!", he told me, "and I hated white people!  I really did.  I just couldn't figure out why they were so nice to me when they knew I hated them."  Finally, nearly fourteen months later, he accepted their invitation to tea.  He was amazed to find himself enjoying his time with them.

Soon, they were meeting every week.  He found himself bringing little presents for them to supplement their fixed income.  "And wouldn't you know it?  I started to love those people.  All my life, I hated white people, and here I was practically becoming a white man's son.  It blew my mind.  I really loved them."

Due to the influence of this lovely couple, he left the Black Panthers, went to university and became a teacher.  In all his classes, he teaches his students tolerance and love.

I just love that story.  And it's true!  :D

Children and the adults tey become, are a product of their enviroment and up bringing, so I believe.

So we all have a responsibilty to "get it right" for children.
Hope that made sense

That made perfect sense.

You know, that is exactly how I look at parenting my children: A chance to "get it right".

It is my prayer that each successive generation of my family improves in spiritual degrees.  Thus, I have given my children a better childhood than I received.  I often think to myself, "How amazing my great-great-grandchildren will be!"

That's a great line!

And it's so very true that its harder to unlearn something than to learn it the first time.

The husband of my best friend's sister had a similar story.  He had been raised by a racist, then surprisingly, he married my friend's sister, a very sweet, down-to-Earth native American woman.

Well, old habits die hard.  He was stil racist deep down and took to teaching his black chow dog to bark and chase after African-American people who walked past his yard.  His attack phrase was "Get the nigger, Shadow!"  (He considered this funny and harmless, since the dog was not able to get over the fence.)

One day, when his son was six, he looked out in his yard and was horrified to see his son opening the gate as an African American walked by, and then shouting, "Get the nigger, Shadow!"  (He managed to rush out and stop the dog before it did any damage.)

After that, though, he was a changed man.  He realized that he had been teaching his children to be racist, just like his dad had taught him...and that scared the heck out of him.

Sometimes you need a shock like that to change you, eh?

Ain't it the truth!  Man, I love stories like the one you related.  They are shocking but when you consider the profound transformation the people involved go through, you have to feel appreciation and thankfulness.

That's what I think too!  One thing is for sure, my son is a far better father than I was.  ( I never had a chance to practice much, since he was already 12 when I married his mother.)

But I think he and I have a better relationship than I had with my father, so I think it's working!:D

That is really wonderful!  Oh, and hats off to you for loving your "step-son" as your own.  Men who marry into a ready-made family and love another man's child as their own are true heroes in my book.

Yea, verily.

When I worked for a board of education in Japan, I used to love kindergarten and day care visits. Unfortunately, the teachers prepped the kids at my first visit by telling them I was a foreigner ("gaijin"). Those who weren't paying attention at first began asking, "Who is the foreigner?" They'd already been playing with me on the playground and wouldn't have known I was foreign unless the teachers had pointed it out.

I dislike referring to myself as "white" or Caucasian. I don't think that it's anything but an odd label. I really don't see any reason for racial distinctions at all.

Again, yea verily.

What does the label tell you about the person? Nothing! I'm half "white" of English ancestry, but how am I anything like the half "white" guy from Grand Rapids of Dutch and Indonesian ancestry? Probably not very much, unless we share similar values.

Values are the key. I have much more in common with the black, hispanic, and Filipino memberss from my church than I do with most fellow Nikkei (Japanese American) in my area.
