Study: Children In Day Care Exhibit More Aggression March 27, 2007, 10:27 AM EST If you are one of millions of parents whose children are in day care, you will want to listen up. A study released by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development said children who spend more time in day care are more likely to develop behavioral problems by the sixth grade. For many working parents, day care is a must. While some can afford to stay home, others can't. That is why quality day care is key. Nida Ahangarzadeh taught elementary school for seven years and was a substitute teacher for day-care centers. Ahangarzadeh now stays home with her children. "If you put them in a setting with more children, your child will be exposed to other children who have violence at home or violence from TV," Ahangarzadeh said. "That's a simple fact." The study tracked more than 1,300 children from birth to age 12. It said day-care children exhibit more aggression. Sandra Briley, director of the University of Texas Child Development Center, said the issue was not day care, but quality of care. "The kind of program or kind of care the children have will affect their behavior," Briley said. "If they're cared for in large groups with poor staff to child rations, they're going to be much more likely to be aggressive and incompliant." Parent Layli Pham is working on a doctorate and stays at home with her child. "I didn't really see any differences," Pham said. Each woman said the pendulum swings back to parents. "If you don't have violence in your home, it'll have less of an impact on your child," Ahangarzadeh said. "The quality of parents [has] a much stronger affect on the outcomes of a child's behavior," Briley said. The study also noted that children who go to day care tended to have better vocabulary skills through fifth grade.
