I really like that statement, Saint.  It demonstrates that you have respect for your students and you value their powers of perception.  Indeed, they DO know our true agendas.  They are amazingly perceptive.

Though I have never witnessed you "in action" as a teacher, I can tell you run a respectful, loving but firm classroom environment where every student is valued as an intelligent and capable human being.

I gotta say, that makes me feel great happiness.  I wish more teachers were like you.

And I'll suggest that you use a little "classroom management" technique there too.  Try to have your child do their homework at the same time each night.  Eventually, it'll become a habit and then other plans such as videogames, cell phone calls tofriends, and TV shows will begin to be naturally put on hold until after that time.

It's important to have a structured homework "workplace" for your student too.  Just as we do at school with our organized classrooms and routines, have a small desk or corner for your child.  Well lit and quiet, where they can go to do their homework  withot distraction.  (the TV room is a terrible place for that!)

That makes a lot of sense because I've learned that the structure thing is key across the board in a variety of dealings.

As an aside, I think structure and consistency is good for us parents, as well!

Cool!
Now let’s talk a bit about discipline on the fly for management purposes:  (Serious discipline should be a separate topic, but there are times when it is neccessary to act quickly to keep the flow of learning going.)

When a student makes an inappropriate comment or takes an inappropriate action and the action isn’t serious (such as bullying or aggression) then take the student out of the situation quickly before they can enlist aid and do a “mutiny on the bounty” routine, turning the whole class against you.  Ask them, “May I speak to you outside, please?” NEVER reprimand in front fo the class.  Student’s whole lives are driven by fear of embarrassment.  Outside a couple of de-escalation tricks come in handly: Use a formal, calm tone.  “What can you and I do to complete our mission or assignment?”  Not, “You need to do this!”  That’s a parental tone.”  Try to sit below the level of the student or come to their level, it’s less intimidating.  But most of all, don’t be judgemental.  I always ask, “What happened right there?”  This means that I’m willing to listen to their side of the story.  Again, if you can, explain why you need a certain behavior or why that behavior was inappropriate.  We all hate, “Because I said so!”

I love it that you portray the conflict as a shared difficulty, not a blame-game.  "What can you and I do to complete our mission or assignment?" is an excellent tactic.
