We enjoy our children at every age. The days of their infant and toddler-hood are precious, as are the preschool years and the first days of Kindergarten. We enjoy having more meaningful conversations with them in their pubescent years, and love them despite the challenges and heartaches of adolescence. The optimism, creativity, love and candor they exhibit throughout their childhood enriches and beautifies our lives. We would not wish to miss even ONE day of their childhoods! Assuming you enjoyed every moment of your children's childhoods, which age was your MOST favorite? In regards to my son, I have enjoyed every moment of his childhood but his third year was my most favorite. That was the year he truly began defining himself as an individual. My son's first word was "car" and he has been drawing and painting cars since his sixth month of age. In his third year, he began his life-long habit of drawing cars obsessively, keeping a folder of drawings beside his bed. After the completion of every drawing, I would date them carefully and give him a hug. His most defining behavior, however, was his propensity to lecture the neighborhood children, ha-ha. Since birth, he has had a strong sense of justice and knows the difference between right and wrong. It has always concerned him that people often choose to "not do the right thing" and it infuriates him. When he was three, he would stand on our second-floor balcony and pontificate to the masses: "Don' do that, your mom will get mad!" "God said you can't hurt people. Stop it!" Of course, this behavior made him VERY unpopular with his peers, ha-ha, thus I had to gently show him how to express his views without alienating people. He now conducts himself with greater social grace but continues to fight for social justice. He has always been this way. When his friend Asineh, a little girl of mixed Navajo and African heritage, is called terrible names, for example, my son runs to her rescue. "Don't call my friend names! How would you like it if someone called you a bad name?" I am very proud of him. Tell us YOUR stories! Here is a photo of my son at age three: ![]()

My oldest is only 7, so I don't have enough experience to say if I'll enjoy her childhood more later. What I can say is that I enjoyed showing her things (animals, lanscapes, etc.) and seeing her sense of wonderment when she was 2 to 4. There were lots of "wows" and expressed fascination with the beauty of the world. She was still excited about seeing the Grand Canyon and other things as we took a drive through Arizona, but it was milder in comparison.

I really didn't start to enjoy life until I got to college. After being wild for a while I discovered what my real innner value sytem is and how to live my life based on that sytem no matter who tried to get me to alter it.

My most favorite time was when I went to college (University) as well. Before that I was a lot more quiet and shy. I "found myself" when I was there, became a lot more open to good people and good experiences, and understood a lot more about life was about. Of course, that doesn't mean that I have gone crazy with wild abandon, became totally uninhibited and a complete extrovert now!

I'm finding my soon-to-be-10-month old has become very expressive. She laughs much more than she did even a month ago, and she is very playful. This is a wonderful time for her. I wonder if I'm going to think "now" is the best all the way up until they become teenagers.

I am parenting 3 girls, ages 2 years, 6 years, and 15 years. Parenting my first daughter, in which her natural mother died when she was 5, has been a struggle. My just turned 6 year old is a joy to parent as she has a real MALE - Go For It-attitude, and is willing to try just about anything, and is very very open to my creative parenting methods. However, the angelic nature of the 2 year old is hard to beat too. My technique is constantly trying to remember how special yet vulnerable children are at all ages. My 15 year old has recently started giving me the line "It's private, I'm waiting to discuss that with mom" -- and that was hard to hear the 1st couple of times. The only thing easier about the teen-aged years seems to be that they have more interests in common with adults, and they really understand so much more..... But don't underestimate the little ones either. dr. Steve

You are perfectly right: Every age has its own joys and challenges, and each stage of the development process is different. I commend you for making a concerted effort to understand and have compassion for every stage of your children's development. aknow wrote: The only thing easier about the teen-aged years seems to be that they have more interests in common with adults, and they really understand so much more..... But don't underestimate the little ones either. I agree. I love it that my adult daughter and I could discuss weighty intellectual and feeling topics during her teenaged years, but I also enjoyed she and her younger brother's insights in early childhood. My ten year-old son often makes wonderful observations about the world and human behavior, just as he did in more simple terms when he was a little boy. By the way: I know your teenaged daughter will emerge from this stressful stage of life knowing she has a terrific father. She is quite fortunate.

My daughter is married and living an hour away ... my son is eleven. I sometimes think I'll be very lonely when he leaves for college. Maybe I'll be forced to race crickets or something?
