Dear Friends,

Often, we are in a struggle with groups that, "Claim to be Christian" or simply use the bible in an abusive way to fit thier teachings and beliefs. I have often found that re-interpretation and excessive use of symbolism is the method of choice by these groups. Tortured rewording and even completely revised versions like the Jehovah's Witnesses own "New World Translation" is used solely to fit thier own belief system. My advice would be to simply let the Word speak for itself. I say this so you don't get frustrated and caught up in the endless circle of reinterpretations & lies.

Anything that is written, read, and experienced can be interpreted in any number of ways.  As Bill Clinton once said. "it depends on what is, is."  Tell me, which of the many versions of the Bible is the correct one, and why are the others not.

Most modern versions are fine and abide to the greek and hebrew manuscript evidence. The JWs bible doesn't follow proper greek but is twisted to fit thier views regarding Jesus and His diety. I prefer the New King James Version. But, you will find good with most modern translations. :)

Thanks, JBF.  Do you prefer the NKJV because it more closely agrees with your interpretation of the matierial presented?

I have researched the various versions and have put my trust in the NKJV for 12+ years now. Again, the modern versions are not in a battle of re-interpretation so much as they are attempting to find the perfect "user-friendly" language use and of course :cash: is behind the copyright, printing & marketing of such newer versions.

The one that you will sit down a read!

I use the Authorized Version (King James) most of the time, but I also use the NASB.

There is no correct version, although some translations are better than others.  A not so good translation will do you more good if you will read it than the best translation will if you don't read it.

That's a fair summary. I also started my faith in the KJV but selected the NKJV later for it's modern english use.

I love the KJV not only for its accuracy but also for its beauty of verse. The fact that the language used is 400 years old is not a detractor to me, since I'm a student of languages and am fluent in German. It's fascinating to see the similarities to German grammar in Elizabethan/Shakespearean English. Naturally, reading it takes more time. The NKJV is fine too, but I simply love the Authorized version more.

I've found the Clear Word to be a worthy paraphrase of the Holy Scriptures, and highly recommend it.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Huh, I'm not familiar with that one. My wife likes the NLT (New Living Translation) for a paraphrased non-study bible. I use the NKJV for everything.

I was thinking that even abuse of figurative or allegical language has some guidelines. The word "hyperbole" has to be very obvious right? If I'm sitting in a chair, which I am:D right now, if I pick it up and tell you it weighs 25 lbs I don't expect that to be interpreted figuratively by you. But, if I picked up the chair and said it weighs 3000 lbs it's obvious that this is hyperbole and I would expect you to allegorize here.

Allegorizers/Spiritualizers forget that literal interpretation requires us to pay attention to the clear use of words. The problem is allegorizing apart from the authors permission and I think this is the biggest problem with the non-christian groups who misuse the bible for gain. It seems like a very high percentage of plain language is spiritualized to attempt to validate an non-biblical view with a bible.

Yes, but the bible says the Devil believes in Jesus...is he saved? God looks at the heart, but man looks at the outward appearance. The heart is the issue between us and God. I do not know what one believes on the inside that is between them and God. Of course, the *content of a belief is crucial. Some believe Jesus was just a good man?

Matthew 16:13-20
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, *“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

*If a person confesses that Jesus is the Christ and believes in thier heart that God has raised Him from the dead they are saved according to the bible.:) Romans 10:8-13

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Matthew 24:4
