In order for us to understand and live God's word, we must be like new wineskins and give our hearts completely to Him; otherwise His message will be lost.

When John the Baptist's disciples, who fasted weekly just as the Pharisees did, also came to Jesus and asked Him, "Why don't your disciples fast weekly like we and the Pharisees do?"  Jesus answered, "Do you think that members of a wedding party should fast when they're at the table with the bridegroom?  That wouldn't be the right thing to do, would it?  But when the bridegroom leaves and the wedding party is over, there will be plenty of time to fast.  That time will come.  You can't take a new piece of cloth and use it to patch a rotting garment, because the old cloth will give way and the hole will be bigger than before.  No one pours fresh grape juice into old leather bags because they can't take the pressure.  They would split open and the juice would be lost.  People put fresh juice into new leather bags.  And that's how it is with the good news of the kingdom."

--Mark 2:18-22, The Clear Word paraphrase

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Mar 2:18-22 KJV
(18) And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?
(19) And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
(20) But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
(21) No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
(22) And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

Mar 2:18-22 Good news bible (GNB)
(18) On one occasion the followers of John the Baptist and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came to Jesus and asked him, "Why is it that the disciples of John the Baptist and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but yours do not?"
(19) Jesus answered, "Do you expect the guests at a wedding party to go without food? Of course not! As long as the bridegroom is with them, they will not do that.
(20) But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
(21) "No one uses a piece of new cloth to patch up an old coat, because the new patch will shrink and tear off some of the old cloth, making an even bigger hole.
(22) Nor does anyone pour new wine into used wineskins, because the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be ruined. Instead, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins."

Mar 2:18-22 Bible in Basic English (BBE)
(18) And John's disciples and the Pharisees were taking no food: and they came and said to him, Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees go without food, but your disciples do not?
(19) And Jesus said to them, Will the friends of a newly-married man go without food while he is with them? as long as they have him with them they will not go without food.
(20) But the days will come when the husband will be taken away from them, and then they will go without food.
(21) No man puts a bit of new cloth on an old coat: or the new, by pulling away from the old, makes a worse hole.
(22) And no man puts new wine into old wine-skins: or the skins will be burst by the wine, and the wine and the skins will be wasted: but new wine has to be put into new wine-skins.

And fasting is the way we become new wineskins, yes?

Fasting is a way of mourning. You can't mourn while the bridegroom is there, but when the bridegroom (Jesus) is gone, then they will mourn...

Mat 9:15-17
(15) And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.
(16) No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.
(17) Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

The way I understand it, unless we let the Holy Spirit work within us, we are still the "old wineskins" and we won't be able to accept the Truth or produce the fruits of the Spirit. We must open our hearts completely and allow the Lord to work within our reborn bodies and minds. We become reborn.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39
