I know I've been away from this forum for some time now but I want to get back involved and do so in a way that is beyond simply posting comments and replies on the wide range of Biblical topics and questions posed here. Don't get me wrong, it is not that I dislike the typical internet forum format because I truly enjoy it, but I feel the need to be focused at times and so I came up with an idea.

I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see how an in-depth, book by book study of the of the Bible would be received in an online forum environment such as this.

We have a lot of different levels of Biblical education in this forum and I think it would be neat to study each book of the Bible through this medium, almost like an small group Bible study one might conduct at home among friends but in the cyber world.

I have a very exhaustive Bible study library here at home (over 450 Bibles, commentaries, lexicons, dictionaries, study guides etc..) and don't mind putting it to good use if people here are interested in participating.

If you like the idea then I would have to ask; where to start? Do we start with the book of Genesis and work towards Revelation? Do we start in Matthew and go to Revelation then back into the OT?

I had thought of alternating by doing one book from the OT then one from the NT and so on, but alot of the continuity is lost that way, especially in the OT.

In order to keep it organized, on track and positive, I think there would need to be some basic guidelines in place but nothing too restrictive.

For instance do we set a time frame to work through each chapter of each book (ie; one chapter per week) or do we let it go free-form and see where it leads?

I would expect that others here would like to take turns in leading the study. I found out quickly that the best way to study the Bible was to be committed to teaching it. About 1 year after my coming to Christ, I was asked by our Pastor to teach Sunday school to adults ages 35-50. Wow! What a way to learn the Bible!

I would venture a guess that there may be people here who would love to try their hand at teaching but are not ready for standing in front of a large group of people on Sunday morning. This might be a medium perfectly suited for those who want to see if teaching is their gift.

So would we have a different volunteer teacher for each book we study? Maybe multiple teachers per book with each one alternating chapters so the other has time to get ready for the next one?

I'm sure there are other things I am forgeting right now but I also don't want this to be so regimented that it isn't fun.

So, if you would be interested in this type of online Bible study let me know and give me feedback on how you would like to see it done and we can take it from there.

Your brother in Christ

DesertRat..........I'll bet JBF would be interested.  I know he's involved with his church too, and I think he teaches Sunday school and, gives the sermon at times!  I'd check in and see what was going on..............it might be hard to stay on "track" in here though.  You'd have to make sure all the questions about other religions weren't taking over, or you would be right back in the normal "back and forth" threads!

I think if we try and make it a general study of the books as opposed to a verse by verse dissection it might be easier to stay on track. Looking at the general message of each major theme in the books so to speak rather than a word by word micro study.

If it is set up as teaching the Bible within the context of the Bible then questions about other religions would not or should not be a part of it.

Hi DR, glad to see you back here like this - great ideas. I want to remind you that you (through this forum perhaps) can also utilize the live chat services we have here. So, if you ever feel the need to have a group/scheduled live chat, let me know. :)

That was a nice offer Frank...thank you. DesertRat, I will talk with 1jester about this. My first two concerns are:

#1. Sufficient time for myself & others to respond and continue forward progress.

#2. Sticking with the Majors and not the Minors of the faith. Denominations are often divided over "nonsense" secondary issues and I would hate to see "division" occur within our small group of Christians here over "secondary issues". Staying in the "milk" of the word and keeping it real "generic" would help to avoid potential lack of "edification within the body".

I will pray regarding this thought and wait to hear from 1jester.

Thank you for the idea. :bigwink:

#1 is obviously an issue given the different time zones and schedules of everyone, which is why I wanted to discuss the idea in the first place.

#2 is very important and as I said we would definitely have to keep it as a general survey of the main themes of each book rather than the micro themes. This is important for the reasons you put forth as well as keeping a single chapter study from taking 6 months to complete.

Let me know what Mike says

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Danny, this is a great idea which I support and encourage. We'll have to agree on the details. I will pray about it. Our main goal is to do the Lord's work and I am willing!

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39
