My wife and I for about 5 years now have considered shutting off the TV for good in our home and simply renting family movies here and there. We were selective regarding what we watched and limited our children to several programs too without a problem but I have questioned if it is the Holy Spirit in me who is prodding me to close it out or is it because we have several friends who have banned television in their homes and have come much closer as a family with great success? We have noticed the ads with sexual messages and personal hygiene are on the increase. We have noticed ads about male enhancement, personal lubricants, birth control, and various other adult topics are flooding the television screen even before 8PM. We see more and more those things that were considered in the past as bad (homosexuality, adultery...) being portrayed now as good and moral and those things that were once considered good (mom's at home, Father role models as being bad or obsolete now. Do you watch TV in your home? ...casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5

I was one of the very few Americans who grew up without a TV in the house; my father thought it was a waste of time, and worse, a bad influence. So we never owned one. He bought one when the last kid went off to college, however, 20 years ago. I am glad we never had a TV, though at the time I thought we were missing out; even then, a lot of the subjects of conversation revolved around the latest sit-coms, cartoons, etc, so I felt left out. However, I'm really glad we weren't horribly scarred by the presence of the abominable Satan Box in our home. And ever since, I refused to buy one or even accept one as a gift. But, one entered my house upon the arrival of my wife, and I must reiterate that I find it a tremendous waste of time and bad influence. I rarely watch it, and in fact, so does my wife. We have cable, so we have more choice in what we watch, but we don't watch it much.

When you can't miss what you never had...I believe that television is a good thing to never miss.

The only thing about renting family oriented movies is, that unless you get movies made by Christian producers, you are still going to have innuendos of some form, even in the most innocent movie. I agree about the programming on TV. It makes me want to throw mine out the door, but then if I did, I wouldn't have anything to watch movies on.

We have noticed ads about male enhancement, personal lubricants, birth control, and various other adult topics are flooding the television screen even before 8PM. I found this thread through the POTD gizmo and it grabbed me. JBF will probably be shocked to learn that I agree with him. Birth control; necessary, but let's lighten up on how explicit the ads can be. If I never see another commercial claiming "extenze will make you larger, it's scientifically proven!!" it will be too soon. That particular commercial makes me want to hurl. I don't care about your sex life and the stuff you need to make it more fun; at least you have a sex life!!! Violence is encouraged in an ad for Direct TV with a scene from Misery taken where the whacko broad hobbles James Caan's character, and Burger King promotes mothers killing the "king" by running him over with a car because he claims his food is "like Mom's". Are commercials geared toward the stupid? The bare few channels I do watch (National Geographic, The History Channel and Animal Planet) even have them! Forget about the rest of the channels. I'll stick to my DVD's mostly. Except when M*A*S*H is on. I have to watch M*A*S*H. So in answer to your question, do I watch TV?....rarely.

I'm with you on this one UTR. M*A*S*H is my all time favorite TV show. I guess I've seen every episode at least 100 times. Thinking about buying the DVDs.

I don't watch tv that frequently, but my husband and I enjoy programs on National Geographic, The History Channel, Animal Planet and The Travel Channel, to name a few. We just press "Mute" on the remote if we don't like the commercials.

Imagine the money that could be made with a device that shows horses riding off in the sunset whenever a commercial came on!

I find that I am less interested in the rubbish on TV than ever, even the "good" networks like History Channel, National Geographic et cetera are slipping. JBF, you might check into something called "sky angel" before you shoot the tv set.

We would rent movies free from the library. We are still in the consideration mode but the more I see ...the more I am ready to pull the plug. My kids are getting goosebumps but they will all have a full recovery my wife and I believe.

I didn't watch TV from about 1997-2003 or 4 and look at some of what I missed. The entire Monica Lowenski ordeal - Just a few years ago I had to search google to see what she actually did with that cigar. The 2000 Election - regardless of whether it was good or bad I didn't mind missing it. Today I hear mentions of how McCain was treated during the 2000 election and don't have a clue what happened. Nothing was seen concerning chads whether they be hanging, dimpled, pimpled, humped, bumped or dumped. I didn't see a thing. 9-11 My neighbor asked if I saw it as I was leaving for work. There was an old TV with a bad picture inside so I went and looked. It wasn't until I got to work before I saw the actual magnitude of it. The list goes on. I did listen to the radio quite a bit so it wasn't like I was just totally out touch with the world. There is much to be said about owning a TV (or not owning one). We once had a preacher that only owned a small TV that was kept in the closet. He only pulled it out every once in awhile for special things, news events etc. I always thought he was a nut. (no offense intended Frank) In 1997 when my life had pretty much gone to hell and the last year of life as I once knew it was ending, I tuned the TV out. I was spending much time growing closer to the Lord. I had been saved decades before but this time, God had called me. In 1998 I moved to Mississippi for 6 months then back to Galveston Texas for another 9 months and I was really growing in the Lord. One Sunday afternoon as I sat in my living room I decided to turn on the TV. It had been a couple of years since I had watched it. I turned it on. Before I knew it 2 hours had passed by and it was like I had been transformed to another place and time. The power of the TV is amazing. I turned the TV off and Didn't turn it back on again until about 2003 or 4. Now I stay glued to it more than ever and wonder where God is in my life. There is much more to not watching TV than avoiding bad commercials and soft porn shows.

I agree about the programming on TV. It makes me want to throw mine out the door, but then if I did, I wouldn't have anything to watch movies on. ROFLMAO! Now THAT'S GOOD IRONY!! Are commercials geared toward the stupid? Ummm...yes. Yes they are. I have to agree with all of you, I've been lamenting the loss of innocence, the desensitization, the lack of family values, and the whole morass that is our society for a while now. Don't get me wrong, I love my country. I guess that's why I take it's slide into self-destructiveness so seriously. I point the finger straight at TV and movies. When I was growing up, sure there was violence on TV. But it was Bugs Bunny dropping an anvil on Elmer Fudd. Last night I saw a man cut off his own head with a chainsaw on the remake of the "Andromedra Strain." It was hyper-realistic. That was at 7:00 pm in prime time when I know there were little children watching. Is that a good thing for children to be exposed to? I think not. Innocence is a fragile, irreplaceable thing. It is a beautiful thing. We all understand that. It's why we still try our best to keep the ideal of Santa Claus alive for the smaller children. Innocence is belief and faith in the better angels of our nature, the wide-eyed appreciation of the miracle of life. TV kills innocence.

Yes. My wife and I spend the Memorial Day long weekend at a friend's cabin in Pennsylvania and didn't watch any t.v. (we did see the new Indiana Jones movie). I spend the weekend conversing, read "The Last Jihad" and started another book ("Knowing God"). Did not miss the tube at all and discovered on my return home that the same rehash of the Hillary, Obama and McCain "stuff" that has been going on for the last six months continued in my absences.
