I say NO!  This is simply the equivalent of asking God to damn something that is unpleasant or distasteful.  It is no different from praying that God destroy a cancer.
God DAMN that cancer.

Okay, so it's phrased quite strongly, but I think He is used to passionate emotions and would not be offended.

Now....on the other hand.... I just experienced a phrase from a "so called" Jesus freak that I truly consider offensive.

She said that she asks her grandchildren when they misbehave if they would do so if Jesus was in the room.

Now THAT smacks of a vain intent in my way of thinking.   The kids get the impression of Jesus as a disciplinarian or cop.   AND it is to get someone to change one's action to conform to the desires of the utterer.

What do YOU think?

I say yes, but i'm not sure why. It's probably just because of the way I was brought up, so every time I say it, I feel guilty. Not much of an answer other than thats the best I can come up with for a reason why I feel that way.

I do agree with you on the grandma thing though, I wasn't brought up to fear God.

I don't think most of us go around saying God Damn that cancer or anything similar to that. Most of us say it when were frustrated or we hurt ourselves. So, if your on your roof hammering shingles, and you smack your thumb with the hammer, what is the first thing your likely to say? That would probably be the first thing you would say, along with every other cuss word known to man and a few new ones you make up along the way.

Did any of that make any sense?

Yeah, that makes some sense.  It is sort of what I had in mind.  I think as you say it is a cultural thing that has been a taboo from childhood inculcated by mothers who just don't want to hear the phrase so they tell you it's "bad."

But in an absolutely objective sense, I think it's just fine.

There would be a difference between "God damn this stupid hammer" and "God damn Bob, he's got a faster car."

A call to damn something that you envy would be in the prohibited class I would suspect.

Once when I was changing a tire the lug nut got stuck (SOB) and I muttered under my breath (G.D.I.) I shouted because it was rusted. The next day I won 20.00 dollars on a scratch ticket. It not only made me think it made me want to help the next fool that got a flat. It seems that God follows me around and waits till I am in pain then fullfills my wishes................he must be Catholic or a Comedian.

To use that phrase is to me, cursing. To take God's name in vain would be in any idle or worthless talk, such as: oh my God, for God's sake, oh Lord, what in the name of God, just to name a few. Just using His name in any idle chatter or a fill in, in a conversation would be vain.

Being an agnostic/atheist, I'm probably not really in good standing to talk about this, BUT:

When I went to Catholic school, we were always taught that "taking God's name in vain" was both using God's name in a flippant way (e.g., a glib phrase like "God's green earth", etc.) AND using it as a command -- e.g.,  "God damn it".  The idea behind the second use is, God's not your butler to be damning and praising things at your convenience.  He's got serious work to do, and he doesn't appreciate you bossing Him around!

It is the intent of the heart that matters. As far as a "so called" Jesus freak...how is that described? Can one love the Lord to much? I often would consider it a privilage if the world called me a "Jesus freak".

JBF, calling someone a Jesus freak, is another way of calling someone a fanatic. And there are a lot of fanatics out there; baseball, football, basketball, hockey, religious.

The real definition of the Jesus freak was the hippie turned Christian with the same long hair and clothes he wore as a dope smoking hippie.

muddawber,

I am familiar with the 60s term. The Calvary Chapel Movement with Chuck Smith witnessed to such people in that generation who came to Christ Jesus.

YES

God's name is holy above all others and to use His name flippantly, irreverantly, in anger or in wishing evil on another is in violation of the 3rd commandment.

?Exodus 20:7 ?“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord ??will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

God's name is to be revered

There are over 100 names for God and each name represented a different characteristic or trait of God. In fact the ancient Jewish culture took names so seriously that they would not even write the name of God for the fear of misusing it.

Psalm 29:2
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

Matthew 6:9
"This, then, is how you should pray: " ’Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Swearing is not a mouth issue, it is a heart issue.

James 3:9-10
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.

Luke 6:45
The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

Thank you DesertRat for applying the word to the question and making clarity according to God's word from whom God cannot lie.

I cringe whenever people use God's name in vain.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

This makes two of us. The Holy Spirit in us is grieved when this is spoken.
