What does it mean to you as a christian to earnestly contend for the faith?

Jude 1:3
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Matthew 24:4

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

You know what? It is wonderful that Frank was used by God with 1jesters request to have this forum for us. I hope we all as brothers and sisters in Christ can do all we can to contend for the faith while keeping unity in the essentials. Often, we believers can break such important fellowship over secondary issues while forgeting the bond of love and peace. Jesus said that it is by this that the world will know that we are His disciples... our love for one another. We cannot love each other like Jesus loves us when we walk in the flesh. We all have walked in the flesh and it is when we are in the Spirit that His love then is poured out through us.

Jesus said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another."

John 13:34

Paul writes," But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another..."

1 Thessalonians 4:9

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Matthew 24:4

I feel that the best way to understand a statement is to analyze the words and then bring them back together to get the big picture.

http://www.dictionary.com defines contend this way:

con·tend kuhn-tend] –verb (used without object) 1. to struggle in opposition: to contend with the enemy for control.
2. to strive in rivalry; compete; vie: to contend for first prize.
3. to strive in debate; dispute earnestly: to contend against falsehood.
–verb (used with object) 4. to assert or maintain earnestly: He contended that taxes were too high.

I believe the word Faith in this scripture is referring to the brotherhood that you were talking about JBF. The group of people that gather together with a single belief, and in this case that belief is Jesus Christ.

So I believe that when we contend earnestly for the faith we are struggling to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to have their own personal relationship with God and his Son.

In the definition of contend it meantioned opposition. But Paul said that our enemy was not "flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darnkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."(Eph 6:12) We all struggle with these dark powers - each in our own individual ways - but as we contend individually with these powers we find it easier to succeed when we stand strong with the help of other believers. God never intended on us making it through this life alone - infact that idea is contrary to everything he set up - we need to help each other so that we can all come back to God together as a Family.

I like how in the definition the third sample it said:

3. to strive in debate; dispute earnestly: to contend against falsehood.

What contention should we be more earnest in than in the contention for truth? Because when a person hears the truth it illuminates their mind and quickens their mind to a greater understanding of why they are here on earth, what God wants for them, and what they should want for themselves and their families.
