Larkin or something Larkin-like?

You got it. Clarence Larkin's Dispensational Truth, or God's Plan for the Ages.

Even if you don't agree with Larkin, those are neat books, really fun to thumb through.

Clarence Larkin is what we will read in heaven instead of comic books.

I'll bet you were looking for spare ribs, Luvdawgs. I'm afraid we don't have anything but fried chicken here.

I would not go so far as to compare Larkin with Chick Tracts!  Larking makes some good points and has some interesting ideas.  Oh, and the charts, you have to love those charts!

To me Larking is also useful as an example of what (some) Christians were thinking 100 years ago.

While he does have some odd ideas (like Job being the builder of the Great Pyramid), he has other ideas that make a common lay person like myself think.  While Larkin should be read with your skeptics hat on, he should be read.

Construct, have you read any of his books other than Dispensational Truth?

Chick Tracts on the other had have some of the worst art work (if you can even call it that) that I have ever seen.  I am not sure that I have ever really read a Chick Tract, so I am not able to comment on the content, but the art work alone makes me embarrassed for whom ever publishes those things!

The outcome was that I became not only post-tribulational but also amillennial. I do not believe that it is possible for most people to derive dispensational premillennialism from the Bible without the aid of the charts.

Could you defend your post-tribulationalism and amillennialism from the bible? I hope so.

No, that's the only Larkin book that I read. I spent a little time with other early Baptist writers though. So I'm familiar with the tone and tenor of the material. I am also conversant with the theological shifts from Dagg to Boyce to Mullins to Conner to Moody, the trail of blood and the anti-Catholic polemics, etc.

Chick tracts are almost a self-parody. They feature all the scare tactics and stereotyping that is characteristic of extreme Fundamentalism. The theological naivete borders on material heresy.

The five writers mentioned wrote the five major systematic theologies for Southern Baptists. Approximate dates are 1857, 1878, 1917, 1945, and 1980 respectively. All but Dagg were professors at Southern Baptist seminaries.
