Deu 14:26  And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

Luk 7:33  For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
Luk 7:34  The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

1Ti 5:23  Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

Based on these verses I believe that it is fine for Christians to drink, but of course not to get drunk.

Agree. With moderation. 1Ti 5:23 shows the healing benefits of a little wine.

I don't believe we have any Biblical proof that the wine in question was alcoholic. If I'm not mistaken, the word "wine" in the Bible was used both for grape juice as well as alcoholic wine. I'd like to believe that Jesus wouldn't have turned water into alcohol (his first miracle) because I don't believe Jesus would have encouraged people to fall victim to the effects of alcohol, knowing how many warnings there are of the ill effects of the strong drink. It's incomprehensible to me that Jesus would have provided alcohol for the wedding guests for this very reason alone.

These comments above are not to claim that people didn't drink alcohol, nor that the Bible tells people to avoid it. The very fact that the Bible gives so many warnings against drinking alcohol tells me that it was acceptable in moderation, and not forbidden, since if it had been and were forbidden, the Bible would have expressely forbidden it. I choose not to drink alcohol in line with the Bible's admonition for leaders not to drink; we must be sober in order to more effectively resist the wiles of the devil.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Hi 1jester,

The greek word for juice, is "chymos", and grape juice, "chymos stafylis", but the greek word used in this passage in the Bible is "oinos", which means "wine". And verse 10 tells of it's fermentation. Usually the best aged wine was served first, and after the guests had well drunk then the green or poor wine was served, but instead Jesus served the best aged wine at the end of the wedding.

All free people would be able to drink alcohol it seems to me.  You can fight for your Country in war, but can't have a few beers with your buds or a nice glass of wine with your dinner?  See what I mean.

I don't believe the bible is the absolute word of god.

I talk to god all the time, god doesn't really have time for the bible or religious doctrine of any kind, god says to me "how can anything that causes division and hatred between my divine creations be of, from or originated by me ?"

I replied "I'm not sure god, but I have to go to bed now and sleep, I have been to work and I'm tired"

God said "sleep well my son, we'll talk tommorrow".

I certainly can't give you one of these >:heartbeat:< for that statement and show that I have represented an approval of that statement... but you are of course free to worship as you wish.

Calvin said the heart is an idol-factory, and this statement shows his wisdom is stuill current.

Creating "blue laws" against drinking, dancing, smoking, going to movies, etc. and confusing this with Christianity creates more unbelief than belief.

I agree with Luther that only divinely ordained commands should have any sway over my conscience.

1Pe 4:3  You have spent enough time in the past doing what the heathen like to do. Your lives were spent in indecency, lust, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and the disgusting worship of idols.

it may be ok to drink  but when it becomes your focus (or idol) it is wrong.
i know this fist hand as i am an alcoholic / drug addict

God works in processes. "Recovery" is not a one time, once-and- for-all thing - it is a process (Romans 12:2). Recovery is not just "fixing" ourselves, but rather it is gaining the "tools" to succeed in working out what God has already put within (sanctification). (Philippians 2:12,13)

Wine should be used for communion.

It is silly to think that Jesus' blood, that which gives us the justification of sins, would tempt some recovering alcoholic to go on a backsliding binge. If the body and blood of Jesus in communion are to make us pure, how then can some people argue that it would lead a person to sin?? It is nearly blasphemous to think that communion that contains a little alcohol would cause someone to sin.
