1) dealer

2) independent garage

3) DIY

What is the labour rate at the shop ?

Are you satisified with the service? or do you feel that they are ripping you off?

For oil changes and tire rotations, I go to a little independent shop around the corner from my house.  They have a computer database, so I always know what's been done and it has the dealer's suggested servicings so I know i'm not getting ripped off.  They are fast and friendly and it is about 1/3 the price of the dealership.

For big things, like when my stereo crashed and burned, I go to the dealership.

Same here! For the easy stuff, it's way cheaper at $50 to 65 an hour rates at the shops, depending on the difficulty level of job being done.

For the really technical stuff where computer analyzers & dealership's similar experience are required, I go to the dealerships. At $90 hour rate.

I was going to the dealer, who charges $85.00 for labor.  Found out they lied to me.  They wanted to charge me for an oil change, stating that my oil was dirty.  I took my car to an independent place and the man stuck his finger in the brake oil and took it out and showed it to me.  The oil was completely clear.

I now go to the honest independent (chain) dealer, who charges about half the price that the dealer did for most things, AND they are certified by Hyundai to do all the factory repairs.  They have the computer program that costs them $1,400.00 per year to show them exactly what needs to be done for all makes of cars at each factory check.

I used to do my own oil/filter changes, but I stopped replacing brake pads, water pumps, etc. with my 1979 Honda Accord. Not only do Ihave more money to pay someone else to do it, but the cars are getting more complicated. There's no way I'm going to do any work on my Infiniti M45.

I take my Infiniti to a local dealer (where I just happen to work). The usual rate is US $95 per hour, but I get everything at cost +10%. ::shades::

I just took my car to pep boys today for a complete check up and oil change

$15.79 was the labor cost

But they do a complete check on the car and they will tell and show you any problems that they find before they fix them

Anything major dodge fixes like recalls

I've used pep boys before and i'm happy with their service

I use to do most of it myself, but not anymore to old. I have a mechanic who adores my car and has taken care of her for years, what more could I ask for.

I do all the work on my cars myself, or sometimes with the help of a friend if I don't have the equipment, so my cost for service and upkeep is zero. I cringe at the thought of paying hundreds of dollars for a service, or $90/hr for any type of work. Forget that jive!! I wouldn't have it any other way. All my cars are antiques, which makes it easier, and I wouldn't be able to do all that stuff with a newer car, but even if I had a newer car I'd do the simpler stuff myself.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

That is great that you do your own work.

I'd recommend that everyone who does their own repairs to get a service manual for your vehicle. Just in case you get stumped...

Rick usually does simple maintanence, like oil and fluid changes himself.  Otherwise we go to his friend Dave..who is an independant.
